I forget who it was, but I was listening to some podcaster and he made the point that since Wayne apparently listens to Wayne all day every day( although I'd like to think he's half joking), he has little to no clue about like cool beats today so he keeps grabbing these 2008 sounding beats. But you'd like to think he has some semblance of an idea since almost every time he features with a younger artist, he kills it.
Yeah i saw an interview i think the one Wayne has with Tyga recently where he talks about he ignores the new new era of like late 2010s to now to not feel old or to not learn/know about slang and s*** that he doesnt naturally or comfortably know and that he mostly depends on his team to bring newer feats and beats to him
Thats probably why he didnt even know about people like Lil Uzi and s*** until he did a song with them lmao ever since that interview it made a bit more sense
It was on the subject of Andre 3000 feeling that hes too old and out of touch of what rap is currently doing and it disappointed Wayne - so then he explained how he keeps himself comfortable & mostly listens to early/mid 2010s and back rap music himself
I wouldnt be surprised he finally learns about a lot of artist after a Drake project comes out and he listens to it lmaooo

even in 2011 wayne hadnt listened to take care and pink friday
He probably takes months to listen or a concert/party to push him to listen

I just remember they were doing that " Do you like this rapper( or group) or that rapper( or group) and I'm sure there's a name for the segment but I'm blanking on it. Wayne had no idea who TDE was. Noreaga had to be like, " That's Kendrick and them"

Wayne says listening and hearing are different but however you want to put it he even says he plays new artist music lol
Its wild because he'll go through a lot of mid or straight terrible beat but pop up with an amazing one every now and then like Pick up Your Heart, She Will & Mona Lisa
Sometimes he picks bad/different beats because they are a challenge to rap over.
But he mainly has good beats and uses a lot of the same beats everyone else does. Its just the ones that are different stand out more example birds.
A lot of Meek beats are alright since his beef with Drake
He still has a dope one every now and then but for the most part theyre whatever imo
Championships had some insane beats - Pay you back? Going Bad? Respect the Game?
Nas
Nas shouldn’t be in this conversation anymore.
Not since Life Is Good tbh
of artist I listen to a reasonable amount Durk has painfully inoffensive beat selection
Tupac
Underrated.
Dude cut ties with Dr.Dre being his producer cause he was too impatient to let Dre cook.
of artist I listen to a reasonable amount Durk has painfully inoffensive beat selection
Also painfully repetitive and a snoozfest
Eminem
1000% the most right answer. everything after MMLP1 pretty much unlistenable for a nigga
Vince Staples
must be talkin about the kenny beats projects cus those the only questionable beats he’s ever rapped over
