Never heard of the Black Pumas before until now.
https://twitter.com/misterminsoo/status/1767930571869622453I’m like 99% percent sure I went to high school with this twitter user, he really gloed up
But idk, yeah they’re kinda bland “Levis commercial” s*** but I don’t see how they’re any worse than Brittany Howard. Certainly better than Morissette
Alright I’m actually considering going lol so here are my thoughts:
Black Pumas is an insane choice clearly slotted by Condé Nast because they’re idiots lmao. They’re not bad by any means, but they’re definitely not a match for the fest’s crowd. Since I’d guess Jai will probably close Blue, the back to back of 100 Gecs into Black Pumas will be hilarious that said, Yaeji has previously closed Blue stage, so I have no idea where she’d slot if Jai takes that. It’d be weird for her to move backwards. Maybe Jai stays on a main stage? Idk, it feels like it’d be a disservice to him to not give him a night slot. Sudan Archives, Doss, Billy & Kenny are all strong undercard picks for Friday as well.
I love all three headliners on Saturday, but not making De La Soul a headliner is an absolute crackhead choice. There’s going to be at least one heartbreaking overlap between those 4, and I’m not looking forward to having to choose one or more to miss. Water From Your Eyes and L’Rain are great, but I need to check out some of the other undercard folks for that day.
Sunday is the weakest day to me, but Brittany Howard has an AOTY contender for me this year and Jessica Pratt and Model/Actriz would be amazing. Muna’s alright, and Grandmaster Flash would be fun, but otherwise there’s not a lot that I’m particularly familiar with. I’m also confused by the Alanis booking, but she’s having a blockbuster tour and I can understand her far easier than Black Pumas.
Overall, not bad at all, and Pitchfork has consistently delivered on undercard future favorites. I’m going to try to get out to Chicago for this if I can, but it’s a tall order this particular summer. Regardless, they got some solid choices this year.

Lemme vouch for Brittany rq, I really don’t care for Alabama Shakes and her album is light years better. Like, to the point that I’m very confused by how Alabama Shakes sucks so much when she’s got this in her back pocket lol

Check out Hotline TNT & Wednesday!
Also whoever decided on the red on shrek green color choice for this poster should be ashamed
Check out Hotline TNT & Wednesday!
Bet thank you going to get a playlist together this afternoon
What's wrong with Brittany Howard?
Nothing, her music just hits my ears the same as Black Pumas: well-made, polished/technically skilled, but sounds made for a commercial; just not interesting to me. If you played a song off Black Pumas album and an Alabama Shakes song back to back, not a huuuuge world of difference IMO
That being said if her new solo album is a huge stylistic departure, I wouldn’t know as I haven’t heard it yet

Exactly what I needed to hear! Flaphead, you did it again
