I would argue that the biggest reason for this era of Drake being so special is because of the two motifs that he used to make much of his music coalesce during this time:
    “It’s yours” and “Know yourself”

Those two themes can be found on a bunch of songs from this era; from Wu-Tang Forever, to 0-100, to Jodeci Freestyle, to Own It.

What are your guys’ thoughts as to why this era was so special?

  • Yeah this was prime Drake for me

I think he was just the most excited for music during this era tbh. Hear the passion in his voice on tracks like Energy, 10 Bands, Jodeci Freestyle, or 5AM in Toronto compared to tracks like When to Say When, Losses, or Sandra's Rose. It's quite noticeable.

The rap records stopped progressing to knew heights as they were in this era. In this era there would be constantly unique songs such as Worst Behavior, Come Thru, 0 to 100 / The Catch Up, No Tellin', Star67, Know Yourself, or Hotline Bling. There hasn't really been a progression of this and instead more of the same basic songs like Hype, Gyalchester, I'm Upset, Money in the Grave, or Toosie Slide. They are still enjoyable songs of course but they don't give you the same feeling.

There aren't any rap records he spits with as much emotion and intricacy as he did on From Time, Too Much, or You & the 6. There aren't many straight rap records that are as lyrical as the Time/Location series (Which we haven't gotten one of since 2016), Draft Day, The Catch Up, or 30 For 30 Freestyle. (Diplomatic Immunity and Omerta are close or just as good though)

He was also making his own style after years of trying to perfect it in the 2009-2011 era. Songs like The Motion, Days in the East, and My Side are sung so well that, even though you know Drake isn't the best singer, you can confidently say this RAPPER can SAAANG.

The lyricism and flow in these more melody driven type of songs are also comparable to a rap song. It's these type of songs that birthed all those Hip-Hop/R&B artists from the past couple of years. Compare those songs to s*** like Peak, Finesse, Time Flies, or Greece and a lot of those things are absent.

Again, they are still enjoyable tracks but the lyrics are simple and not as clever, the singing is auto-tuned in the way the kids are doing it nowadays and doesn't flow as well or effortlessly, the beats are basic compared to how elaborate they were in the past, etc.

Just seems like there is a lack of care. At least as much as back then. And that's what happens when you release music at the rate that he does. He really needed to give himself time between projects more to keep developing his own sound that he was working on all those years instead of trying his hand at everything. That's why I'm excited for this new album. This the longest he been working on a project and he seems really proud of himself. I really hope he has found his passion again. Passionate Drake is the best rapper alive and best music artist of the century imo.

This era was special for me because of the timing in my life. Just graduating high school and going to college and having those memories being brought back whenever I listen to that era of Drake is what makes it special and I feel like that’s what really makes people miss or love certain eras in artists careers, not exactly the music but the point in time

There are a few reasons why his music experienced a decline in quality after 2015:

    • he started working with future more often and admired how quickly future would churn out songs. i noticed he started spending less time on putting together songs after this

    • he became the biggest rapper of the 2010s after views. Eminem was bigger than him up until that point and Drake lost his hunger for rap after he reached the top. “Billboard melodies, rap is just something I do on the side” and “I still love it but I used to love it more” are two lines that point to this.

    • his mind became “plagued with beef” after getting exposed by meek mill. Drake has brought up in multiple interviews how 40 and his mom pointed out that he sounded angry and defensive in his raps. It’s no coincidence that his two last albums, which received poor reception, came after beefing with other rappers

Based on his Rap Radar interview, Drake is taking his time with his next album and is no longer beefing with anyone. He might deliver another classic this time around

Agreed with most of what you said, and I'm sure many others share the same opinion. S*** just happens when you see your bank notes triple whilst using a certain formula in your music that may be 'easier' than what you've done before. And I'm not saying it was minimal effort but compared to previous eras that intricacy and care seems to be missing in my opinion.

Yeah this is a good point as well. There’s just a certain level of intimacy that was achieved on DITE, GLB, Too Much, Own It that he hasn’t captured since (closest since then imo is Teenage Fever).
