I need another listen but on first listen there's no BAD songs but not nearly as many standouts as on getaway on first listen
I like that they raised the funk dial up a notch tho
goat things
idk how Fantano can suggest RHCP need ghostwriters lol thought the whole point was to sound like they're riffing and just kind of f***ing around...personally I find the lyrics pretty fun despite some goofy moments here and there
part 2 out
Anthony on the Rubin Podcast today:
“John I want you to know that whenever we’re apart and I’m doing music, I never forget you.” 🥺🥺🥺

dude was killing me with the reaction lmaoooo I was rolling
I assume he'll take the album listening session more serious, couldnt see him giving this album less than a 6 even if he being extra harsh on anthony

yeah he did admit the band was killing it...just don't know what he expected from Anthony as that's pretty much always been his style regarding lyrics and performance

fr dawg! Like you don't listen to talking heads for MJ tier godly vocal performances lmao? nah you listen for the weirdness of the vocals
same with anthony in his lyrics man, I love that weird stream of conscious lyric s***. And when he does come through with some meaningful songs it make it hit even more for me
its strange cause even when fantano reviewed IWY which had some of the goofiest lyrics I ever heard he was like "anthony came through on this album but the band was lacking"

I do agree with him on the These Are The Days chorus being a little cheesy

it grew on me, I like the way it sounds and they havent really done a hook like that before. sounds like weezer/blink182 or some s*** like that
But the smelllllls part is hilarious lmaooo dude sang that s*** like charlie chaplin
PUP & RHCP the same week damn
Who cares about the lyrics in RHCP to be honest. It's a band that from their first albums sing about things like "Catholic School Girls Rules" or "I Want to Party on your P****"

exactly my point in my previous post lol I thought their whole shtick that made them loved in the first place was having "loose" lyrics that sounded like them just riffing and freestyling a lot of the time...I agree there's a couple cheesy moments but he rated the album way too low IMO
Aquatic Mouth Dance smooth af
Worst song by far is thst lame ass "LUV ME LUV ME WAKE UP AND HUG ME WAKE UP N SQUEEZE ME" trash, how did that chorus survive the cuts lmaooo
Not enough backing vocals by Frusciante
1. "Black Summer" on first listen the pirate vocals were jarring but ironically this is the catchiest song on the album, particularly when it comes to hooks 8/10
2. "Here Ever After" it's alright, the verses are adequate and the chorus is smoothly delivered but felt like something was missing that would put it over the top 7/10
3. "Aquatic Mouth Dance" tied with poster child for grooves song on the album. Song just screams smooth, whether vocally or instrumentally 9/10
4. "Not the One" melancholy If/porcelain type song with a pretty good hook but goes on too long and doesn't really build up as it goes 7/10
5. "Poster Child" tied for grooviest song, s*** slaps with funk groove not seen since one hot minute era, effortlessly catchy, love the part with the faith no more style synthetic towards the end 9/10
6. "The Great Apes" torn on this one cuz I like most of it but feel like keidis pretty much ruins it with that cringey "SUPERSTAR GO DO THE DISHES" part of the chorus, I'd have taken pretty much anything instead of thst trash lmao 6/10
7. "It's Only Natural" stadium Arcadian filler tier song, not bad but kinda dull and just there and has that annoying "steadyup" part at end of each verse. 6/10
8. "She's a Lover" the hump de bump/Ethiopia of the album, dunno why keidos thought anyone would be into jamming to or singing along to that hideous LOVE ME LOVE ME HUG ME NEED ME NEEDE ME PLEASE SQUEEZE ME trash with a straight face 4/10
9. "These Are the Ways" terrible chorus that would fit better on an Avril Lavigne or Paramore album, I do like the part at the end with "sail us through the open gate" too little too late still a skippable 5/10
10. "Whatchu Thinkin'" this one's kinda dope, like the urgency of the vocals, keidis goes off 8/10
11. "Bastards of Light" the dad rock of stadium and I'm with you is channeled hard here, but there's some good stuff in here 7/10
12. "White Braids & Pillow Chair" I see what they re going for but the melodies just aren't strong enough to stand out in the first half. Second half is cool and unique tho with the echoed vocals and drums 8/10
13. "One Way Traffic" it's OK I guess, not much to say about this one, feel like had he coke up with better or at least catchier or quotable lyrics it could have been a standout as of now it sounds like hes trying and struggling to make the hook stick with all the AYO AYO6/10
14. "Veronica" what it builds up to is cool, problem is the journey to get there isn't very compelling 7/10
15. "Let 'Em Cry" starts promising but then comes another hump de bump/Ethiopia level cringe skip when that awful chorus sets in BOBOBTHE LOVA WE GOT YHE OTHA. STFU Keidis 5/10
16. "The Heavy Wing" Only song where Frusciantes presence is really felt vocally and it's all the better for it, this one's a power house epic all the way through. The verse delivery sounds alot like black summer without the weird pirate accent, black summer woulda been a 9/10 with these vocals, this one's the albums onpy 10/10
17. "Tangelo" another if/porcelain type song, I kinda like the lyrics and background synths/organs. As an album closer its an 8 but on its own its a 7/10, nah f*** it it's an 8/10 s***s kinda beautiful
Flea gets a 9, did what he always does, crushes it on bass, will Ferrell was am 8 on drums, followed the rhythm well and had a few standout sections. John frusciante gets a 7 overall cuz while he did great things on the guitar it feels like he came in from a position of weakness and didn't really involve himself in the songwriting or vocals like he used to since he was prolly playing nice since they just let him back in since previously he would get bossy and they d almost break up
Keidis gets a 7 too cuz his good moments are among his best but there's alot of uninspired half baked melodies and cringey lyrics that ruin some of the lesser songs
Overall it averages out to a 7/10, I'll round it to 7.5, it has some good moments but doesn't come close to matching the infectious catchiness of The Getaway and you don't really feel Frusciantes presence as much as you should
