DON OMAR VS DADDY YANKEE

Daddy Yankee got his start in the early 90s on the legendary Playero mixtapes. By the time the 2000s came around, he was already an established reggaeton artist. Him and Nicky Jam were killing it in 2000, 2001, 2002. In the late 90s, DY signed for the label "VI Music". VI was a budding record label at the time, and had big artists like Hector & Tito running the game. DY released "El Cartel" Vol. 1 and 2, "Los Home-runes", "ElCangri.com" and "Barrio Fino" while he was with VI music. DY was arguably the biggest thing in the genre up until Los Home-runes.

Around 2001, Hector(from Hector & Tito) discovered William Landron Omar(Don Omar) early in his career. Don had been singing at a church, but left religion behind after a childhood friend was murdered. He chose to begin a career in music and joined with Yanuri to make a duo singing reggaeton. "Suena La Music" was one of their first hits. Anyways, Hector signed him up to VI Music and he performed as the hype man/"corista" for Hector & Tito for about a year or so. While hanging out with them so much, he wrote and performed several standout tracks from one of my favorite albums ever; the great "A La Reconquista" by H&T. After that, the hits began to rain from Don: Desde Que Llego, Accoralala, Sueltate Conmigo, Se Enciende La Disco, Tu Te Estas Calentando, Leona and many more came out from 2002-2003. In 2003, he took part in the Luny Tunes compilation album: MVP. Where he broke through with the classic "Dale Don Dale". From that point on, it was Don's world....

That same year, he dropped "The Last Don", one of the greatest albums in genre history and arguably the album that took the genre to the next level with songs like "Dile" and "Aunque Te Fuiste(Vuelve)" becoming huge hits. Daddy Yankee was featured on this album, on the song "La Noche Esta Buena". Since they were both signed to VI Music, they had a good relationship. Don appeared on "Los Home-runes" for the massive hit song "Gata Gangster". They also collaborated on the underrated gem "Suena El Bajo" on the "GuataubaXXX" album. When Don became only the second reggaeton artist to have a solo show at the Roberto Clemente arena in Puerto Rico(Tego Calderon was first), Daddy Yankee(along with half the genre at the time) joined Don on stage at the end to celebrate what a huge moment it was for reggaeton. Tego, Hector & Tito, Daddy Yankee, Don and many more got on stage to sing an early version of "Bandoleros" hook. One of the great, underrated moments in genre history:

Don followed this up the following year with a live version of the album, that included the massive hit 'Pobre Diabla'. By this time, Don was starting to call himself "El Rey" or the king or reggaeton. Last Don sold more than any album before it and he just couldn't miss. "El que todo lo pega" or in english loosely translated to "the one who never misses" was on top, and DY felt he needed to step it up, or else he would get left behind. In the summer of 2004, DY released his greatest album: "Barrio Fino". This album was hyped for literally YEARS by Yankee lol he would scream "Barrio Fino coming soon!!" at the end of every song he made for like a year and a half lol When it finally came out, Gasolina was the initial single. I remember I hated this song and to this day still find it annoying/overrated but the rest of the album was nearly perfect. Huge hits like "No Me Dejes Solo", "Lo Que Paso Paso" and "Tu Principe" helped make the album explode. Gasolina became a world wide phenomenon, and it appeared DY had reclaimed the throne. In a few songs on the album, he sends some shots to Don and anyone who believed he was slowing down. Like on the intro, "King Daddy": "tu quieres ser como yo ahora, pero Lebron James nunca va a hacer lo que hizo Jordan" (you wanna be like me now, but Lebron will never be Jordan). Reggaeton was in the middle of its golden era. In the 2005 VMA's in Miami. Don Omar, Tego and DY performed reggaeton for the first time live on American television. Will never forget that moment.

Anyways, the beef really picked up from there. BF had replaced TLD as the highest selling album in genre history and it was on. Don Omar was supposed to have a song on Luny Tunes "Mas Flow 2" album, called Mirame. For unknown reasons, Don was left off the track and it was given to DY. On the track, DY sends the most clear shots yet. "ronca ronca y te patie gallo bolo, los numeros hablan por si solos!" (talk s*** and i kicked your ass, numbers speak for themselves), which is a direct reference to Don Omar's 2005 hit "Ronca". Ronca basically means talk your s*** in PR slang. After this jab by DY, it was really on. A few months later, Don released the first diss track: Yo No Me Dejo

This song was a bomb when it dropped. People didn't expect Don to go so direct and hard at Yankee. He speaks in english during the intro to make fun of DY's frequent use of english in his songs(DY even has an all english song on BF) and raps about how DY has been trash since his "Winchester 30-30" days(his OG rap name), his old age(DY at the time was rumored to be lying about his age) and how he just can't fw him etc... Song was pretty popular. Produced by a certain young stud producer called Tainy...wonder whatever happened to him? lol
Anyways, DY had to respond and he responded in late 05/early 06 on the remix for his hit song "Gangsta Zone". On this remix, he had a bunch of features: Hector(who was also beefing with Don at the time), Arcangel & De La Ghetto, Angel Doze and Yomo. While the features were nice, Yankee's verse was what everyone was talking about:

On this verse, DY had some gems such as: "soy una leyenda, deberian tomarse una foto conmigo" (im a legend, you should ask me for a photo), "no compares un dolar con un penny, hasta tu propio combo están comprando mis tennis" (dont compare a dollar to a penny, even your own crew is buying my tennis shoes", "el rey de reyes es uno y se llama Jesus Cristo"(the king of kings is only one, and his name is Jesus Christ). This was a classic verse and response. The beef was hotter than ever. How would Don respond?

In 2006, Don released his second solo album: King Of Kings(why DY used that line). On KoK, Don dissed DY on the first track "Reportense"; with a light jab "a mi no me roncas, rompa lo q rompas"(dont talk s*** to me, break whatever you break), in reference to DY's 2005 hit "Rompe". King of Kings was another massive success. With hit singles such as "Conteo", "Salio El Sol", "Angelito", "Ojitos Chiquitos" and "Not Too Much"; Don regained the sales throne. As King Of Kings became the highest selling album in reggaeton history. A title that album held for more than a decade. It peaked at #7 in the US Billboard charts. Insane, considering now a days Bad Bunny highest peak was #5. And that was before streaming. DY responded to the shots on the intro to "Los Benjamins" a few months later. On the song "Royal Rumble", DY raps that nobody will ever be able to reach his level of fame, with lines like "me ven en BET, TRL por MTV pleaseeeee...pa ca tu no podras subir!"(you see me on BET, TLR on MTV; please, you won't be able to get up here) and "quieres llegar a mi nivel? Te dare 2 soluciones, cante mas! Y no hables tanta mierda en tus canciones!" (want to reach my level? I'll give you a solution: sing more and don't talk so much s*** in your songs!):

King of Kings took the year by storm, though. Now back on top, Don released a second diss track for DY; "El Rey". Also referenced as "9/11/06":

On this track Don is at his peak of s*** talking and swagger. He demonstrates his technical ability, with a dope ass flow/rap structure. Song also features an American artist, Rell, singing the hook in english. This song was a direct response to the Gangsta Zone remix, as it begins with him rapping "4 de cada 5 estupidos, una de cada 3 veces en su vida..cometerian un acto de suicida como el que ustedes han hecho" (4 out of every 5 idiots, 1 out of every 3 times in their lives commits a suicidal act, like you guys have just done)--dissing the people that were featured on the Gangsta Zone remix. On the second verse, he turns his full attention to Yankee. "cuidao con eso viejo, de estar mirandote en el espejo a verte lindo, si se te estan callendo los pellejos..digo de socio un consejo y by the way; yo no me tiro fotos con cualquier pendejo" (be careful old man, looking in the mirror just to see if your skin is falling off..i mean as a friend, just giving you advice and by the way... I don't just take photos with any fool). With this line he continues jabbing at DY's age and directly responds to DY saying he should ask for a photo on GZone remix. He also insinuates that Yankee doesn't write his music and that if he ever need help writing, he knew who to call. At the end he also tells DY not to call him, that they aren't going to make peace and record together. The one miss on this track is the last thing he says, when he calls DY a one hit wonder lmao

After this, the beef died down quite a bit. DY released his follow up to BF and Don was busy dropping compilation projects. In 2008, during a Wisin & Yandel show in Puerto Rico: Daddy Yankee and Don Omar made peace. It was a great moment, after years of beefing...the two biggest artist in the genre hugged it out in front of a raucous crowd.

In 2009, they finally released their first collab since 2004: Desafio. While it wasn't a huge hit, it was a great song and great to see both of them together again. The following year DY hopped on the remix of Don's huge hit "Hasta Abajo". In the original, Don sings about being in a party and asking to DJ to "play one from El Cangri(DY)". The GOATs were back on good terms again. In 2014, Pina(from label Pina Records) set out to do an ambitious tour called "The Kingdom" in which both would "battle" each other all night. They promoted the show for months and would go to award shows together. It was a wild time lol They would perform a medley of hits by rounds, and at the end they would diss each other face to face; before finally embracing and ending the show singing their collab songs. It was an amazing idea and show, but it was short lived. As differences emerged between the two men during the tour and it was cut short. DY said Don didn't have the best work ethic, Don said he won't work with DY anymore etc...

And nothing has happened since then, 2015. Since then, they both have been enemies from a far. Don has not made much music since then, while DY has continued to churn out hits. They have had some brief incidents in the last few years. Like when Don accused Pina and DY of buying views on youtube. DY responded on IG with a story calling out envious people. More recently, Don posted on IG a few weeks ago celebrating 15 years since his debut classic "The Last Don" dropped. He thanked everyone that collaborated on the album, yet Daddy Yankee was the only person he didn't tag in the post. Simply putting a hashtag #DaddyYankee instead. Interestingly enough; a few days ago DY posted the same thing, but about his classic Barrio Fino album. On the 16th year anniversary. What's funny was they both said similar things in the caption. "this is the album that changed the genre etc.." lol. So I can't help but feel that that was calculated by DY. Would love to see these two collabing again. S***, I'm still fiening for new Don. That's a wrap. The 2 GOATs. The reggaeton Tupac and Biggie but they're both still alive. Hope y'all enjoyed it! If y'all show love I might do more of these
