really wish their legendary reputation carried over into the new gen...a lot of people write them off as boring which is f***ing insane. @op what's your fav album from them?

Legends. Basically the first alternative rock band

  • Shoutout the hometown heroes One of my customers is really good friends with the entire band and been to every show since their first show in the church parking lot in 1980. Got personally flown out for their farewell tour by the band. I forget what they called day one fans like him but they had like exclusive backstage passes to the show, best seats in the house and got to party with the band after the shows. Really amazing story he told me

  • Honestly never listened to their music. Going to dig into them OP thanks

Personal favorite feel like that dynamic moment at 2:53 was pretty influential to Radiohead etc

obviously but no sane person would pretend Byrds fall under the alternative rock genre

Out of Time and Automatic For The People are basically classic rock (literally Led Zeppelins bass player helped arrange the music) and considered the mainstream sellout albums to OG fans. The earlier stuff was a lot more ethereal and harder to pin down.

  • This their masterpiece however maybe cause of the collosal nostalgia I have growing up to my mum cranking the album

those are the grandfathers. again i dont think it makes any sense to place VU in the same genre as radiohead, coldplay, nirvana, rhcp, strokes, etc. where REM clearly is

idk I don't fret too hard about categorization. Too many artists doing too much to be easily slotted like that. I guess if you're making rock and roll that isn't always traditional verse chorus verse then you're alternative to me. Don't see how Coldplay and RHCP fit into that. Strokes either really.

well then thats your own custom headcanon category and not the well established alternative rock category that has been the dominant one in the whole latter part of rock history

not even trying to fret about categorization just saying REMs place in that lineage of rock in the past 40 years is incredibly important, however you refer to it
