saw this tweet, show comes out tonight on HBO. thought i'd make a thread for it because it sounds (and looks) pretty crazy.
yea just finished the first episode and this is heattttt.
first off, the cinematography and score is so damn good, doesn't even feel like a documentary in moments and I think that's very purposeful. the line between fact and dramatization is blended so well. the show is about something pretty niche but it takes things very seriously because the people involved do.
my thoughts on the actual show though... George is... strange, not quite neurodivergent, at least not noticeably but clearly off. he's decided that he will die at 95 and is going to spend the rest of his life looking for a companion (women between the age of 30-50) and im kind of loving this subplot about him finding a lover. What he built is truly magnificent.
Jeff is the General Manager and he's passionate about his work but he's not as business savvy as one might need to be to run a multimillion dollar festival (and town). He's a loveable kind of a guy, well adjusted, has devoted his life to the Renaissance but I don't know... he's obsession and devotion to George might get in the way of his ability to lead. He's like Kendall Roy S2. cucked and a servant to the boss.
Now Louie on the other hand, he's def Kendall Roy S1 energy. He's wired. tons of ideas, some dumb, some good but he's a worker for sure. He's a trust fund kid who wants to use his family's money to buy the festival but i'm not too keen on what he might do to the essence of Renaissance with him in charge. Guys like this have a lot of big ideas but have a habit of taking the soul out of things. But if the money's right, it seems George is more than ready to let somebody else take over so idk

@op safdies produced? Don't see anything with them attached
Why wouldn't HBO advertise their involvement like they did with Telemarketers?

If Safdie bros really produced it and HBO not using that to market this they're definitely intentionally sabotaging themselves

Yup they’re in the credits!
Yup they’re in the credits!
Being in the credits as executive producers doesn't necessarily mean much at all for certain productions. Take HBO itself for example - True Detective: Night Country had McConaughey, Harrelson and original creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto created as executive producers on every episode, yet they had nothing whatsoever to do with that show. The only reason they receive that credit is due to old, already-standing contracts that have to be upheld.
I'm not saying the Safdies aren't necessarily involved in Ren Faire or anything like that - I haven't looked up the details - but it's also possible that the show was based on some original idea that they were involved in at some point that led to the credit, but they could have stepped away some time in the past and the show moved on without them.
The key creative forces behind the finished product are creators Lance Oppenheim (who directed all 3 episodes as well) and David G. Herbert. If I had to guess, I'd say the Safdies found out about the concept at some point while it was going through the HBO pipeline, and they probably assisted in making it a reality, hence scoring a credit along the line.
Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

oh yea I definitely understand how production credits get thrown around. I will say the marketing of this kind of tells the story. Safdies aren't even mentioned in the trailer and I find that super interesting because Telemarketers was highly promoted as a Safdies production, I think even one of the brothers tweeted about the show. This on the other hand is clear to be from the vision of Lance Oppenheim who from what I've heard about his other work, seems to follow this same aesthetic of highly stylized documentaries. When I was watching this first episode, I did kind of see that grimy guerrilla style filmmaking style of the Safdies so I wonder if that's why they got the production credit but who knows tbh.
this only 3 eps???
