  • A friend of mine made this and I thought about the use and possible spamming of the 4:3 aspect ratio as all the indie films are using it.

    Is it cringe or cool?

Yea as long as theres a reason for it.

Its obvious when a film does it just to be different

i think it looks neat and do not see a problem with it

well what justifiable reason is there other than someone thinking it looks cool?

    its cool
nice way to change up how shots are framed without feeling too crazy

what's the purpose of utilizing 4:3? because indie films and it's poppin?

i think 4:3 requires more thought for the composition of the shot which could be stimulating for the director and DP but if it's a gimmick then cringe

The aspect ratio could lend itself to a story in alot of ways.

In the case of 4:3, since its boxy s*** gonna be more close up instead of it being wide. That could visually Amplify an intimate story, or a story that supposed to have a anxious vibe, or a psychological type of thing etc etc could be alot of s***.

But If a nigga tryna shoot a large western about the vastness of the wild west and its animals or some s*** in 4:3, it wouldnt make sense. It prolly would look cool tho but would be annoying. A wider aspect ratio would get the point across better

i see your point! i guess i'm just more optimistic about the final product but yeah it should probably only be used with good intention

For sure. To me every aesthetic, structural, and tonal decision should serve the vibe of story, if theres a disconnect the movie will lack in some way.

Thats why i didnt really fw guava island. Nothing really connected. And the story itself being flimsy didnt do it any favors. It looked nice as hell tho
