Why do you think that it's ok to watch a movie and give it a rating on first (and maybe only) watch but for music it's different?

People want you to sit with the album and replay it numerous times

I have my ideas why but KTT what do you think

probably has to do with how humans’ primary way of interacting with the world is visually

  • i watch movie 5 times in a row back to back before i feel comfortable reviewing it

Are you talking about regular people or actual critics lol

Cuz actual critics watch movies multiple times (if theyre not at a premiere event)

    The average person doesnt care

good question, the length and overall density has to do with it for sure. plus I think it's easier to comprehend movies because there is a very easy-to-understand structure to most of them. of course it applies to music too, but then again it's easier to 'get' a 4-4 three-minute tune while spending more time with something longer and more intricate

and yeah both regular watchers and critics often watch movies more than once before drawing any conclusions

    Because they are inherently different.

Movies are largely judged by how they leave an impression on you. Were you able to suspend disbelief? Was it fun? Did it look cool?

Music is judged by if it resonates with you. Meaning did you feel the right emotion the artist was trying to create? There are lots of reasons why you might not feel the right emotion on first listen. Maybe the piece is more abstract, maybe you personally are in a bad mood, or maybe you're not in the proper environment for the vibe. It's way more subjective.

Probably because music is something we revisit frequently. The song as a unit of art is made to be consumed repeatedly. Some people do not rewatch films.

i personally barely think its okay

i think a first review for a movie should be labeled as just that

second time watching a movie can be a whole different experience

  • Dec 23, 2021

Because people define their personalities through musical artists more than movies and dont like having their feelings hurt when you say “this album (and you, by proxy) is really bad”

  • Dec 23, 2021

music you can replay while doing other things (driving, working, just chilling etc) rewatching whole movies is a lot more commitment that most people just aren’t gonna do

  • Dec 23, 2021

You need to go review some hoes on your d***

  • Dec 23, 2021

A big part of the enjoyment you get from a movie is finding out how things unravel and progress.

Music on the other hand tends to be more enjoyable the more familiar you are with it, and when you know the lyrics already

I feel like I "get" a movie more in the first watch more than an album

A lot of my favorite albums I didn't like on first listen

  • Dec 23, 2021

I don’t think there’s a problem with reviewing either after a first experience

That score is always subject to change anyway after more watches/listens

This whole decade I had in my mind that Spider-Man 2 was such a dope movie and I finally rewatched it for the first time in forever before No Way Home and that s*** is lowkey ass lmao
