    radiant child

you'd think he'd have enough revenue coming in from the rickrolls. seems like a bs reason to sue somebody.

Lick Lastley - "Never Gonna Take a W"

Yeah this is pretty much unprecedented, I’m wondering how they actually came up with this, either he needs money or it’s more of a personal thing where he heard the imitation and was offended

    GoodbyeCarl

Would singing imitation be infringing publishing or what?

I think he's doing this now cause he rightfully deserves payment from the song's success.

No there’s no copyright on the sound of someone’s voice lol, this would set a crazy precedent, like Mariah Carey could say Ariana Grande is actually just an impersonator

From what I've read, they got permission to interpolate, but not sample, so the instrumental's a remake of the main synth hook from the original

I think in this case it might be different than the Mariah/Ariana thing, because it's a direct imitation of a song, I definitely thought it was a sample of the original when I heard it

Personally I think it's a pretty dumb lawsuit but there's a precedence in other mediums, in Back to the Future 2, after Crispin Glover's role as Marty's dad was replaced by another actor wearing prosthetics to look like Glover, Glover started a legal battle that was settled out of court, but now the Screen Actors' Guild doesn't allow producers and actors to use methods like that to deliberately invoke the likeness of another actor without the rights to that likeness

i think it originated on 4chan like most early memes haha. but back in the day i don’t think 4chan was as nasty as it is now lol

An interpolation can typically include lyrics and any aspect of the song though, unless there was specific wording in the contract. I’ve never heard of this distinction being made
