I get where you coming from but I guess for some it’s trying to be upfront and maybe say even if I wasn’t the biggest fan I can respect this person. There’s also people who end up derailing hit saying oh you didn’t even like his work why are you faking. So maybe trying to give a dif angle to appreciation and gratitude while being honest? I’m not sure.

There is a time n place for everything tho as you’re saying but death makes people feel weird.
