Ripley is an American neo-noir psychological thriller television series created, written and directed by Steven Zaillian, based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Starring Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, with Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood and Johnny Flynn as D***ie Greenleaf, the eight-episode limited series is the first adaptation of Highsmith's novel to a series.

so I just finished this. beautifully shot show, first off. I've only just recently watched the 1999 film and absolutely loved it. Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman all give such great performances. I also really liked the homoerotic nature of the relationship between D***ie and Tom.

Now this show is different in quite a few ways that took me a while to get used to. For one, D***ie and Tom actors are much older and that just was a lot for me to get over lol. They are also way less charming and charismatic. D***ie, being this free-spirited playboy in the 1999 film, to being this kind of this insecure, stilted and naive grown ass man. Tom is equally very stilted, plain, and standoff-ish even in moments which is just totally different the "just happy to be here" persona of Matt Damon's Tom. Other character differences I noticed is Gwyneth Paltrow's Marge is also a lot more cool and fun in the 1999 film than this new Marge and don't even get me started on Freddie!! I feel like they knew no one could ever really replace PSH's performance so they just went opposite. Either way, let's just say, the show had some obstacles for me in the beginning but I was eventually won over by the direction, the cinematography, the pacing, and the acting mainly being handled by Andrew Scott who is really super creepy in this version of Ripley. Sociopath is the word I'd use to describe him. Devoid of any feeling towards anything and anyone and barely capable of even feigning a sense of life for others. Also loved the detective, he really stole the show for like 2 episodes. That whole cat and mouse between Tom and the detective was really great stuff.

So all in all, I did enjoy this new interpretation, although i don't think it could ever replace the old one. I don't think it's trying to, I think it's just a new take on a story and character that's been around for a while and for that, I think it did a good job.

    Agree with everything you said

  • 7/10 watch. Casting was awful and it shouldn’t have been 8 episodes.
