Never said his other movies were like that

You said “for a director like Eggers” just tryna figure out what you mean then

What’s Eggers style? Is it straight forward & not polarizing? Or is it?

FYI, I don’t like artistic movies, that induce you to think too deeply using shock value (The Holy Mountain, example).

I understand their allure but just not my cup of lean.

Its just either mystic terror (VVitch) mystic suspense/thriller (lighthouse) or in this case mystic drama/action

Thats what I would say anyway

Eggers movies before this were very small scale. This didn’t have too many locations but he managed to make the scale feel a lot bigger. He showed he can master adventure as well as mystery.

Eggers is a one trick pony but every time I bring s*** like this up apparently I just don’t know what I’m talking about, most of these arthouse movies plots are mind numbingly generic but if it’s a director every cinephile thinks they have to like in order to feel “smart” they’ll look the other way and be biased, if this wasn’t A24 and not made by this dude no one would be saying it’s the best movie of the last 5 years, matter fact they would be looking for reasons to justify why they thought it was mid lmao

I’m starting to notice a big disconnect between me and the praise alot of newer A24 s*** is getting from everyone, it’s just not for me. Give me a movie like First Reformed over this any day of the week.

The Northman is a pretty straightforward action revenge film to be acting like it’s some mind numbing artsy fartsy nightmare that only some pretentious people you’ve made up in your mind are pretending to like.

That being said it’s not comparable to Gladiator or Braveheart or other crowd pleaser epic period pieces. It’s still pretty relentless and raw and something general audiences would still be somewhat alienated by.

I'm sorry but you naming The Holy Mountain as posterchild for the type of film you're talking about shows you completely missed the point of that film and why everybody loves it so much

Reference: the ending of that particular film

Holy Mountain also dense with metaphor and allegory which is what makes it "artistic" whereas if it was just the shock value stuff it would be a forgotten exploitation movie or whatever. Eggers style usually a little more out there but this is pretty straightforward. only a little bit of weird viking ritual and mythology stuff might confuse you.

Also the fact that The Holy Mountain explicitly ridicules both those films you're referencing AND also the pretentious people at the same time in that final scene

    No

Pretty sure Bergman gave it to Bresson for influencing the tortured faith aspect of his movies and Diary is f***in intense in a very understated low budget way. First Reformed was basically a remake.

I’ve never seen Brave Heart but I think plot wise there are similarities to Gladiator

But yeah like you said not as many crowd pleasers.

The main protagonist here isn’t even set up as someone to root for either. They show him pillaging villages, enslaving people, & we find out his main goal isn’t even a shared sentiment by his mom
