It was never underrated, it had immense critical and commercial success when it dropped. 98/100 on Metacritic, second highest rated game on the site and highest rated 360/PS3 game. Got 3 entries in the Guinness Word Records for its sales - highest grossing video game, highest revenue generated by an entertainment product and fastest-selling video game in 24 hours

People have this idea that it's underrated but how much better could this game have done? And ironically they overrate it by putting it above SA/V

Every gta is critically acclaimed and since probably VC has massive hype before it's release

Fans reaction never matched its reviews, if you're going by metacritic score the user score even just a few years ago was way lower than the other games

A lot of people felt it was a downgrade since they removed a lot of features from SA. It wasn't until years later when perception really started to change

How is it underrated if they did in fact remove a lot of features from SA? They took away stats, tattoos, car customisation, haircuts etc. Driving feels awful. Understandably, it's not as highly regarded as SA and V (debatable, but gameplay in V can be seen as an improvement overall and just has more people who played it)

Idk what people expect the reaction to be for IV when they call it underrated. It doesn't get much better than having the 4th highest rated game ever on Metacritic and breaking sales records, not just for video games, but entertainment products in general

I'd say the perception changed to it becoming overrated after V's single player was a disappointment. Everyone was thirsting when they saw stuff like stats, car customisation was brought back, it was sorely missed in IV. Then people realised V's plot/characters are ass and they started doing 180s on their disappointment with IV

The elite story and way better overall gameplay went underappreciated over letting niko become a fat ass balkan

One thing about 4 tho is how you can only spend money on trash clothes taxis and weapons

More grounded than others and in canon as an illegal immigrant you can't go flashing money but at least be able to launder money through roman or something

my theory for IV’s lack of features was that it was a new engine they were using and was mostly an experimental game that they eventually perfected or enhanced with V. Im sure IV will be the evolutionary equivalent to what San Andreas was.
