I hate to sound like a “gamer chud” but Grand Theft Auto is supposed to be controversial. All the creative heads that made them that way consistently no longer work for the company. They shouldn’t make another entry in this series if they refuse to push boundaries. Wanting them to retain what they’ve always been doesn’t make you some reactionary a******. They’re games about committing crimes and most of all biting satires of all of American culture across the board. The potential watering down isn’t the company “maturing” as some people will try to say, it’s just sanitizing it to give their corporation a cleaner image.

I’m all for inclusivity and more current social climate conformity as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the story - and they make fun of both sides of the pendulum.

Tlou 2 did that perfectly tbh.

Now see, now you’re framing it as if that’s the kind of the thing I’m talking about specifically. Like even the way you’re wording it puts me a corner to defend it. Like “they just don’t want to hurt marginalized groups” so now I have to explain why here’s why they should or something like that. It’s just not a fair way to talk about it. The appeal of Rockstar as a developer was that they were as the name suggested, rockstars, they didn’t give a f***. They were essentially making more realistic versions of South Park. And no it’s not just cutting back on targeted satire of groups, it’s a general cultural thing. Like I said the head teams of writers that made them what they are are now gone. It’s an entire overhaul of what they are.

What are some examples of them being ‘rockstars’ and the ‘realistic version of south park’ that you want them to retain?

Genuine question. The games were never about just making fun of communities. Just like how south park isn’t. Games have always been written by dudes from the UK who satirise the evils of America

Again I never said it was about making fun of communities. Why are both of you putting words in my mouth and asking me to defend things I’m not talking about.

The radio programs are a good example. As someone firmly on the left (literal socialist) they were funny satires of both the American right and left. They had colorful bizarre characters interacting and saying off the wall insane things that were offensive yes but funny in that context. They pushed buttons even in their depiction of violence. Every game made it to the news. The torture mission in 5 being the latest example. I don’t think the new team working there would even consider wanting to make a controversial mission that would make it to the news. I don’t think they’d want to dedicate time to creating radio stations with potentially offensive dialogue that alienates certain people politically or socially unless it confirms to the current hegemony.

Yeah just ignore the article with all the information about the direction of the company and GTA as a series. You have plenty of s*** to talk about rather than mock someone sincerely trying to have a discussion.

Did you just ignore the major part about how all the writers and original founding members of the company no longer work there. Rockstar isn’t some conscious entity. It’s a business with people. If the people that made it the way it is are no longer there, it’s no longer the same business.

Until we know more about the game I don't think much can be said. I'm just giving them the benefit of the doubt based on their near flawless track record.
