I hate to sound like a “gamer chud” but Grand Theft Auto is supposed to be controversial. All the creative heads that made them that way consistently no longer work for the company. They shouldn’t make another entry in this series if they refuse to push boundaries. Wanting them to retain what they’ve always been doesn’t make you some reactionary a******. They’re games about committing crimes and most of all biting satires of all of American culture across the board. The potential watering down isn’t the company “maturing” as some people will try to say, it’s just sanitizing it to give their corporation a cleaner image.
I'll bite and give this a nuanced response instead of being outright critical.
I would argue the idea that GTA is supposed to be "controversial" is a projection people have, from you in this topic, to the media portraying it as a murder simulator or similar accusations. For me, and I would argue many others, it wasn't because the game was "controversial" in nature is what made it good, but the revolutionary mechanics and attention to detail in the world building is what makes GTA a good GTA. Besides GTA IV, the stories haven't been THAT great in retrospect, respectable yea but I honestly wouldn't worry too much about them "toning" it down since it is a new team, they need to get their creative juices going going into a project like this, and I would personally rather them scale back on the humor until they get the mechanics just right as opposed to going all out on untested humor, which can go horribly wrong either way but eh.
I agree on the satire being important, though at the same time there's only so much you can do before it's forced, which in today's society yea it really is hard to do so

This is really respectable response and argument. I largely agree with you. I’m still cautiously optimistic about it. I just have a few reservations. I really wanted a period piece so they didn’t really have to worry about toning anything down while still giving us a more serious and focused narrative. I think everyone’s blowing this news out of proportion from the culture war lunatics calling it “woke” and the people going in crazy defense mode against them to the point of standing behind any overcorrection Rockstar makes.

Well said
My GTA Online character is female
You roleplay as a female on GTA Online?
You roleplay as a female on GTA Online?
You play GTA for hours at a time. Would you rather be looking at a Man’s ass the whole time?
The female in question:
A Snoop type female GTA protagonist would be hard as bricks ngl

satirical commentary on 'current/contemporary' events plays a major role in the story telling in the series as well as the world itself - the radio station and billboard advertisements, name of shops, etc- Toning that down would take away from the essence of the game for alotta ppl including those that arent necessarily looking for controversy

Exactly, but mostly their main point is correct.

most of their commentary was very specifically anti-american. you partake in interagency warfare, corrupt policing, and the world as a whole is a hyperbolic play on american consumerism, pop culture, and economic decline
to say it would stop because the team is now more "soft" is ludicrous
I couldn't care less, they need to work on creating better and more responsive gameplay
