GTA 4 is the worst of all the 3D entries (not counting the stories games of course)

Ok yes, it obviously isn’t a bad game. But the use of it as the benchmark GTA baffles me.

The driving alone is unbearable it’s like the shocks are made of play doh. Has a decent story and is less goofy than other entries but that removes a lot of the charm of what makes GTA what it is. Explain how it’s the best please

i think it's fair to call it a really good game but an ordinary gta (for most ppl)

e.g. a lot of elements people came to enjoy and expect in the series like customisation were either dropped completely or massively nerfed.

personally i couldn't care less and prefer a first class story, more serious tone, sharp writing etc. that put IV about its contemporaries

I like the driving in it some vehicles are a b**** to handle but for the most part I don’t mind it. Plus I love the rag doll effects when you run people over and stuff. It just feels awesome bulldozing pedestrians with your car

I love the story from start to finish for the most part. It’s not perfect but I love the vibe they went with and Niko is somewhat of a tragic character. He kept my interest whereas in V I lost interest in all 3 of the characters. Did not care about them a single bit and the missions felt boring in V to me. Liberty City just felt so alive in IV even if there wasn’t a lot to do besides hanging out with your friends and stuff. I just love the overall gloomy tone of that game

Totally fair the story is definitely more serious than 5 but I couldn’t give a f*** less about Niko or anyone else in that story/game, as goofy as it was I felt much more attached to Michael, Franklin & Trevor. Los Santos is 100x more fun/exciting than Liberty City. The grey gloom of 4 made the game very unattractive to me as opposed to the vibrance of 5. Having been to both LA and NY irl I think LA fits a video game setting much more even tho I probably enjoy New York more overall irl. I can see why people like 4 so much but after beating the ballad of gay Tony when it first dropped haven’t felt the need/want to touch that game since, 5 is leagues ahead in literally every way imo

Not going to say GTA 4 isn't a good game, but that s*** was definitely a disappointment after SA. No tattoos, no stats, no car customization. It felt stripped down

And people LOVED that GTA 5 brought those back. I don't know when this "GTA 4 is the best GTA" narrative started, but I feel like it really took off once Rockstar committed to Online and GTA 5 ports instead of a new GTA. GTA 4 easily has the better story but 5 has better gameplay. SA > both anyway

That’s cool man if you prefer V I just could never really get into it. The driving is smoother for sure in V. IV just has a special place in my heart and I love pretty much everything about it from the story to how the guns sound and how loud they are. It just sounds like a war zone when you’re going off on the cops haha. But yeah I love driving through NY and New Jersey. San Andreas was more fun to play in than in V for me tbh even with V’s better graphics. Ultimately I just really didn’t care for Mike, Trevor and especially Franklin. The story dragged for me I only completed it twice I think

Nah I agree that game definitely could’ve used some customization coming after SA. That would’ve made it even better

I feel like a lot of the praise GTA 4 gets for it's story is because of the color tones of the game. It automatically gives it a more "serious/mature" vibe. But a lot of the characters are one dimensional mid. Roman, Jacob, Brucie are not better than what's on offer in other GTA games. And it follows a lot of the same beats. Protagonist works his way up, gets f***ed over by someone and ends up getting revenge
