I hope GTA 6 is actually more dark/serious. Still keep that signature silliness or absurdity but kinda write it like RDR2.

V has superior gameplay. IV was successful when it came out but was considered a bit too dark, especially coming from the jetpack madness and combine harvester chaos in GTA San Andreas. There's a reason why the Gay Tony DLC is looked back at fondly. But I'll push back on the sentiments that IV is too dark and say that after the Fusion Fix mod that came for PC and restored missing items from the console versions, I can definitely see why some people love it. Amazing atmosphere.

Wanted to mention it in my post, but I feel like the dull/muted tones of the game actually count in its favour. Gives it a unique identity in the series and makes players automatically refer to it as the most dark/serious even though the other games also has some pretty dark s*** in it/GTA 4 still has that wacky GTA humor

I feel like while it may have been a criticism at first, gamers seem to love IV for how dark it is now. Both visually and story wise

I feel like some people look at IV with rose tinted glasses because of V's subpar plot, writing and characters This is a game that's looked at as "underrated" - look at those review scores. It was the most successful entertainment product in history (not just video game) when it dropped. It's considered one of the best games of all time. The game gets its flowers and then some

I view it similar to RDR2 where everybody seems to overlook the game's blatant flaws. Coming off SA, IV clearly felt like Rockstar's first attempt at GTA on a new console. Customization options are stripped back, no tattoos, no car modifications, less girlfriends, no character stats, no jetpack, no planes, could you even cut Niko's hair? I remember playing IV and feeling disappointed, so much that was in SA was missing. And I remember gamers being hyped before V launch when they revealed those features would be coming back, it was missed in IV

I feel like there was a massive shift in the public reception of IV after V dropped. People weren't really calling IV the best in the series until after V dropped, before that it was largely seen as a step back from SA. Still an excellent game so I'm not too mad at it but it's definitely not the best in the series imo

yea san andreas is the best in the series (so far)

SA is like Django Unchained or Othello. Pieces of art that achieve a new level of greatness because the creators decided to throw some nigga in it

The first time I played, I was actually annoyed by the side content in the world popping up randomly because I was into the story that much lol. Replaying the game recently, I think it's mostly the repetitive missions that I can't really get past, but if you haven't played it on PC with the Fusion Fix mod, you gotta check it out now. It looks amazing

the sheer amount of customization and side activities you can do in that game melted my tiny brain it was so ahead of the curve

The story is actually very solid. It's Hangar 13's gameplay loop which follows Ubislop "clear the area" mechanics dragging it down, but the story is not the issue
