Colemani love mural but i dont think its like one of the best songs ever or anything. a lot of it is just him saying random s*** cause it rhymes or it's a homophone and there's a bunch of filler lines given how long it is

I agree. I think people overly praise it because of its length and it came at a time when Lupe was getting back on his rappity rap s*** after some mediocre projects.
Its nowhere near my fav Lupe song.

I hear you but it’s still very impressive
You can study the blueprint of what he did on that and figure out the mechanics but attempting to write something like it is an entirely different beast
It’s not a Lupe record I revisit frequently. I view it as one of those tracks that displays his talents as a rapper. He has plenty tracks with great songwriting that I prefer to listen to. On some hip hop s*** like straight barring tf out Mural is on another level though

Oct 15, 2021·editedMural honestly isn’t even Lupe’s best display of lyricism. Mural is mostly just a super lyrical stream of consciousness. It’s great, but he’s done better. Twilight Zone and Failure are both more impressive. Twilight Zone with the backwards wordplay he doing comparing inanimate objects to real world things. And Failure with how he was laying metaphors/entendres related to the d*** game. The first verse on Failure in particular has some of the best wordplay ever put in a rap song. Royce could probably write something similar to Mural, but not as good. He definitely couldn’t write anything close to Twilight Zone or Failure

I find Lupe grandiloquent as hell most of the time, but this is quite an interesting lyrical and linguistic exercise to show the complexities of trying to subvert the inherent power structure of language (this isn’t my opinion, but I feel that’s what he’s doing here). It’s an interesting way of highlighting hidden power and the difficulty of using language with said hidden power to undermine language and culture and promote women as an unalloyed source of power.

weneedabigmanlupe wordplay is top tier but the way people reach for the depth of some of his lines crazy. A lot of those lines dont go past vague references of concepts, its like abstract references but never anything that u could say is deep or makes sense. Like a Lupe fan explaining Tetsuo and youth will basically tell you "Oh he's speaking on geometrics and this religion and this and that etc." Ok, but what is he saying about it? Usually nothing. His lines bounce between ideas and occasionally dude draws a parallel but never really gives a perspective or thought about that parallel
and sometimes to me it comes off as some spiritual ab soul type s*** where he's just saying some metaphysical s*** that sounds crazy on the surface but really he's just free flowing words and concepts that relate vaguely but nothing I would call interesting or exciting
Of course that's just when he's doing that Mural rappity rap s***. When he's doing a concept song or album like Drogas Wave then it's hard
