Rap is the new pop due to streams and sales, but it's still not a pop genre.
Drake is the embodiment of Pop. He literally makes music for everyone, hops on trends, and plays things very safe with his music to keep his mainstream audience.

and the production credits aren't that different, this album in his entirety is just not as good or concise
TPAB dropped right before Freddie Gray's death and the Charleston shooting. A lot of the themes on that album coincided with the sentiments of the BLM movement, so of course it was going to resonate with a lot of people.
Mr. Morale is a different story. He isn't making music for people anymore, it's for himself. Plus, the album just came out not too long ago so I wouldn't dismiss it just yet

Warren Peaceall this discourse on sales and I’m surprised no one has mentioned the timing. we just had two mass shootings within the past 2 weeks. I think a lot of the public, myself included admittedly, just isn’t in the mood to vibe to a conscious album about trauma when the country is drowning in it right now
Pop rap fans who only listen to what’s on the hot 100 don’t understand that not every album is meant to played in every setting and mood.

And Kendrick is not a pop artist. If he was, he would've went the Drake route and chase after trends to stay on top. But he doesn't.

They were huge due to fact that it's Kendrick, but it wasn't following the same sound as most mainstream rappers we're doing at the time besides Alright. That's about it.

one could argue that DAMN is the hardest kendrick has ever pushed to make the most mainstream music!
if I recall that album is his most successful album too but he didn't sacrifice his personal integrity. It was still a well curated album!
