37:20 - the transition from me and those dreamin eyes of mine into s*** damn motherfucka is NUTS

18:30 - this part of Brown Sugar is crazy.
I get it, this man doing vintage stage antics and music references in the whole show with one of the greatest live bands ever and all hoes could say is "take off the shirt" I'd go crazy too.
That nigga D'angelo a f***ing god yo.
you dont see this much meticulousness into anybody's live show anymore (besides Beyonce and D'angelo, that 2015 north sea video is nuts). Other show I can recall being this amazed by is King Kunta Sessions.
Put him in the title lol
u know wat u right,
literally just finished watching it when i made the title so I was just emotional lol.
how the f*** we go from this to daniel caesar and brent faiyaz? 💔💔
couple things:
1. either @FREE or @user brought it up in a thread before but we f***ed up in a big way letting hip hop become the sole center of "black music." Not even just D'angelo but a lot of black artists before the late 90s, when they talk about their influences, it's not just rappers, it's funk, it's R&B, it's gospel, it's blues, it's so much more. (and in D'angelo's case, he's literally the Kobe to Prince's MJ. Watch the interview I posted in this, the nigga is an encylopedia of music in general. But you can tell he studied prince through and through in his artistry)
now every black artist's biggest influence is solely hip hop. and nothing else. And thus we lose a lot of things in translation.
Untitled doesn't come from a singer who's only inspiration is "hip hop", ?uestlove said himself that song is a direct Prince tribute.
2. We dumbing down our youth intentionally so music theory aint even being studied. One thing about every D'angelo show from the 90s to now, you gon see him PLAY the piano. Not singer/songwriter play the piano but PLAY that s***. Lotta singers can't really play instruments, all we got rn is HER and Paak, and HER be playing it safe on the albums.
3. music industry not investing in bands, D'angelo himself talked about this in an interview (one of the best ever, i'ma timestamp but I highly recommend watch the whole 30 mins)
(24:10)

Like you dont even have to do all the dancing, al green, james brown type s*** D was doing. HE don't even do that no more in his black messiah tours and THOSE videos are still some of the most exciting live shows I've ever seen.
Just get a live band bro

i'm listening to that album but idk man. maybe part of it is I'm tired of mutt tho lol.
One of the most underrated musicians. Son is a musical genius
my knowledge on d’angelo’s live material and shows is limited
thanks for sharing
the few i have seen, he’s shown nothing but insane power as a multi instrumentalist
i been singing the brown sugar chorus and the lil background vocal of it for 2 decades now

Dawg the mans is a living gem. It makes all the sense in the world he’s a total recluse cause he prolly spends mad time just listening to music and playing the s***.
Curse of genius.
I almost wasnt gonna click this but thank god
D’Angelo so goated
Damn 💔💔💔💔
