So Geto Heaven Part Two was going to be the instrumental for D & Lauryn Hill Voodoo song?

We gotta figure out who the person was that copied his pre-voodoo demo song & what their song was.

I'm guessing it was someone on Kedar Entertainment, could be Big Bub
Edit: most likely Chico Debarge - Iggin' Me

Crazy thing is I could definitely see Common during that period of time rapping over Chicken Grease.

D’Angelo was not the intended beneficiary of “Chicken Grease”. Questlove and Poyser came up with the song during a session with rapper Common, who was recording his album, Like Water For Chocolate, at Electric Lady. When D’Angelo eventually heard it, he couldn’t let it go. He coveted the Questlove/Poyser stank for himself, knowing he could do it justice, “Common doesn’t know what to do with that song” D’Angelo told Questlove. “That’s the funk that I need. You know good and well that’s the funk I need.”

You know it still doesn’t feel real that D has passed away. It’s really surreal this tbh. I remember when I first discovered D’Angelo and I was in my late teens (I think 19) and it was like the mid 2000’s or just a little later. Rolling stone had a ‘500 greatest albums of all time’ and I was literally going through a lot of those albums and see if I found a new gem in the process

Then I see ‘voodoo’ without no prior knowledge of his music or anything whatsoever. And it was just like nothing I’ve ever heard in my life. Pure music, artistry, just a feeling of this what music should or can be when you have a real artist crafting there work to create something so incredible.

Ever since then I just loved ‘Voodoo’ easily my top 3 albums of all time. Clearly his influencers over the years in songwriting and how he creates the music was influenced by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Prince, James Brown among others. But D he was in his own lane. Very difficult to compare him to anyone one else, because there wasn’t any artist doing what he was doing let alone in genre of R&B and soul music or music in general.

Over the years being on KTT and KTT2 i made a D’Angelo thread on the og KTT and it was really nice to discover there was people here who appreciated and loved his music like I do. And my god what a joy it was when he did finally release ‘black messiah’ after all those years. I’ll never forget those moments.

And that’s what I take from his music, I’ve had moments where I’ve poured my heart out to songs like ‘the root’ just completely lost in the music. I’ve had moments of happiness, sadness and pure euphoria listening to his music in this lifetime.

I am forever grateful I got the privilege to see him live in 2015 at the Hammersmith in London. The best musician I’ve ever seen live! For me his music went beyond fandom and standom, he was a true artist in the literal sense. You rarely get an artist like that in this lifetime.

D’Angelo may your music live forever, it will always hold a special place in my heart. RIP Thank you 🤍
