It’s difficult. Generally I agree however I think policing language to that extent will never work out in the long run.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with explaining to someone why that type of language can be offensive and I don’t think it’s some sort of human right to be able to make homophobic jokes. However, personally I’m willing to tolerate some edgy humour even if sometimes it misses the mark. I understand people may find some of it offensive but I think ultimately it should be a debate rather than a diktat.

For example, I’d say as a society we have collectively agreed that the n word is not acceptable for non-black people to use and we’re approaching that with other words and phrases too. It’s important for people to point out the offensive nature of some language and invite discussion on it. A lot of people aren’t really aware of their biases especially if they think they’re just being funny.

I also don’t understand why people take this as some sort of personal insult or attack on their freedom. It’s a post on a forum about “sus” has homophobic connotations. If you want to keep saying it that’s cool, but some people might not like that, and you’ll have to deal with the consequences of it.

True, gay does have a non offensive meaning as well...

I don’t think the backlash against the use of “gay” is an overreaction really because it’s quite blatantly conflating “bad” with a sexual identity.

Same thing with the re***d word. I sometimes use it nonchalantly and I have close family members with disabilities who I know would take offence to throwing that word around since it is a derogatory word. I don’t think it’s a big deal to phase those terms out, and if you want to continue using them then it isn’t really a big deal, unless you want to do so in public and still be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else who doesn’t use them.
