The Weeknd obviously falls into this kind of laziness but with a big caveat, no one listens to a pop song for the lyrics so at the end of the day who cares. You start a Drake song for the lyrics so when they're not hitting the whole song starts to feel useless.

You play a pop song for the same reason you play a rap song. You want music that sounds good. His music sounds good and always has clever word play, double entendres, ect. I really don't want to hear Drake rapping about his feelings on the Hamas Israel conflict and the political state of modern America.
What makes rap good is the diversity of rappers. I got Kendrick and Cole if I need that, Drake got a lane he's comfortable in.
