    nothin
roe vs wade was pretty significant both in the actual effect of the court's decision (like 4 states immediately got to ban abortion followin the decision) n in the cultural salience of the issue at hand

now media is just trying to turn supreme court stuff into culture war blah blah.

How the f*** is it the media's fault that SCOTUS is hot garbage and doing whatever they please ?

This is about to be 50 mini-states

Poor people to be even more f***ed

Everyone who’s the most vulnerable will suffer above anyone else

And all the elite liberals in their cities will be looking down at us a la Lord Farquaad

And if we poors attempt to move into those cities we’re likely to be criminally prosecuted for being homeless, because we sure as f*** ain’t gonna be able afford d*** once we move there

What made these old n---as turn up all of a sudden?

It takes a while for cases that were filed with the knowledge that there are six conservative votes to actually reach the Supreme Court

And they always release decisions from cases that they heard during the prior year (October-April) all at once, more or less, in May and June

So even tho they got RBG’s replacement sworn in during October 2020, May/June 2022 was basically the earliest they could actually pull the trigger on doing all the things they planned

? this thread makes it sound like there’s real like election fraud level s*** that could stem from this decision. the decision is in reality over maps and the NC courts’ potentially arbitrary use of power to reject legislatures’ maps and approve their own (no review process necessary on their own versions). the likelihood of this decision snowballing into legalizing fraud and overturned elections is 0.001%. the thread is overblown n misleading u. the thread is using nyt (a media outlet) as its source for all its info. there you go

Guess you don't comprehend the ramifications for this ruling at all

This isn't some massive media conspiracy, its you not thinking Republicans will act in good faith when its obvious they won't for every single situation.

I'm not arguing with someone purposely being obtuse

Republicans are rigging the system and its obvious to anyone who isn't okay with it, this is all part of it

    fun

It takes a while for cases that were filed with the knowledge that there are six conservative votes to actually reach the Supreme Court

    what this mean

The conservatives have six votes since October 2020. But because of the way the federal court system works, if right when Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, someone was like “yes! now it’s worth it for me to file my case to overturn x law because it actually has a chance to succeed,” they would have to file at the district court level, then that court would hold a trial and rule. Then someone would appeal and it would go to the court of appeals. Then someone has to appeal again and the Supreme Court decides if they are going to hear it. And then they actually hear the case. Which all takes a long ass time.

All of these cases were more or less filed before that, even — in the case that overturned Roe v. Wade, they were originally arguing just to get the number of weeks it was legal to ban lower, but then when RBG died, they changed their argument to try and overturn the whole thing. So tbh the cases actually filed to really go crazy haven’t even been seen yet.

i'm pretty sure what he's saying is that it's not like the sc just up and decided to start making decisions after not doing making any decisions at all for years prior, it's that major cases were currently on the docket and regardless of outcome/decision it's being spun that the SC is strategically doing a bunch of cases only now for ideological reasons, when in reality while you may be able to say that for the judgement sure, these cases have been pending on the SC docket for a long time and the reason they're being done now is because they're clearing it before summer recess

so dis is about maps but nyt took the liberty of saying "well...it may be about maps.....but it COULD domino effect into state legislatures completely controlling their states' elections!" even though the concern is with maps and potentially arbitrary overreach by NC upper courts

sure that's what the issue at hand is, and of course the experts that they cite are going to be as hyperbolic as possible, but if the independent state legislature theory is that when the Constitution says "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof," it means that "Times, Places, and Manner of holding Elections" are to be "prescribed" solely by the will of a state's legislature and not the state's judiciary or the state's governor despite what the state constitution says), the legislature is not just going to restrict itself to going ham on maps (and it wouldn't be rational for them to not push the envelope as far as they could)
