Wow, today I found out Sean Baker is a 52 year-old straight man and not a 38 year-old gay man like I imagined for some reason
I love how Seans writing process for these films is basically adaptations of real life stories he heard from the community he researches.
The plots for Tangerine, red rocket, Starlet, Florida project all stemmed from stories that were told to him during his time researching.
The pedo scene in Florida Project came about because Sean and his co-writer showed up to the motel and were trying to talk to the kids there (About casting) and the motel manager came out ready to throw hands because he thought they was weirdos at first lol.
So Sean took that experience and flipped it into the pedo scene.
Anora is, according to Sean, another story about someone on the fringes of society. “In terms of theme, it follows the line of my previous films,” he told Kinotico magazine, clarifying that the film was “a story about a s***worker, but the tone is closer to comedy”, adding that it is, more specifically, an “adventure comedy-drama”. Sean’s films have toed the line between comical and profound for some time. Tangerine managed to capture the kinship between two trans women in Los Angeles perfectly, but the film was wrapped in a comedic package. Similarly, there were plenty of laughs in Red Rocket but the film was about the volatile, furious temperaments of men in Trump’s America. Whatever we’re getting with Anora, it’s likely that it’ll be hard to define as one straight genre.
