I don’t trust anyone who prefers section 80 to TPAB

    Why?

    Why?

Feels like saying you prefer Scorcese's short films to Goodfellas, for example. TPAB is so complete and fleshed out, and one of the only rap albums that feels like it needs an epic scope imo, that I can’t imagine what someone sees in S80 thats superior to it besides nostalgia or one just really doesn’t like jazz or soul

    TPAB by far

I like the songs and sounds of S.80 way better.

I feel like TPAB goes over my head since I never really experienced racism like that.

TPAB is also a deeply rooted musical album.

There are many references and influences of west coast hip hop and soul music, at times it feels like Kendrick is doing his best Nardwuar impersonation. Kendrick took his listeners on a historical musical journey while lyrically remaining relevant to today. Almost to say that many issues the musical forefathers and mothers have sang about haven’t changed one bit.

G-Funk maestro George Clinton on the intro 🔥

Hearing the DJ Quik & Suga Free/James Brown influence on King Kunta was dope. West Coast and harkens back to the origins of hip hop which is funk and jazz.

Then the Momma Sample of Layla Hathaway. An amazing songstress and daughter of the Royal Donny Hathaway

The Isley Brothers influence on “I”

    Etc. etc.

You may never experience racism but you can listen to music within the context of the times. James Brown “I’m black and proud” is a political response. Then James Brown as a whole is one of the main contributors to Hip-Hop and a direct influence on King Kunta.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's a bad album by any means, but it's never clicked with me. Might give it another spin if Kendrick drops something new in preparation tho.

TPAB a better piece of work but S80 is a project you can always just throw on and enjoy; it just has that vibe to it.
