he’s definitely gonna be in a deal w a major even if it’s just distribution
Why exactly do so many rappers use big labels for distribution tho ?
Why exactly do so many rappers use big labels for distribution tho ?
Distribution is expensive
You basically gotta hire all of the different pieces that the label already has ready to go
Usually easier just to give the label a much smaller % in exchange for them distributing than it is to try and build a team to do it yourself

In the past yea distribution deals were basically just funding for manufacturing an album (CDs etc)
But now the difference between label services and distribution is super blurred so it includes marketing, music video funding, sorting playlisting and etc
Could include PR but sometimes big artists have their own PR team separate from the label
Basically the reason an artist like Drake does it is because he has 3 options
1 - regular label deal where he probably gives away the masters and he gets something like 20%. Label does everything for him, funds the album creation etc
2 - full independence. He can do whatever he wants but he has to distribute the album, potentially produce physicals for himself, market the album, potentially clear samples and features, fund any videos, organize interviews etc. he gets a higher cut here and owns the master
3 - distribution/licensing deal. Basically he still gets to own everything like the master but he licenses the master to a label for say 5 years and let’s them collect 20% of revenue in exchange for distributing, marketing, etc
So sure being independent entirely would give him a higher cut but for someone in his position it’s probably easier to just license the master and let the label figure it out since the label earns a % of revenue they’re Incentivized to help it profit as much as possible

People who like SZA will keep listening to her.
People who like Zay will keep listening to him.
Y’all acting like a music label is a sports team where Kendrick was leading them to a hypothetical Game 7 win.
