It was a relatively common thing people would say about SF several years ago when their homeless problem went from really bad to horrendous. I always thought it was another exaggeration based on something that happened like once every now and then.

But then i went there for a week-long trip with my mom back in 2019, and we witnessed it happen at least once every single day, and always while we were on one of tourist streets a couple blocks from our hotel.

One of the times we were on one of the big red hop-on tour buses with the open upper deck, driving down one of the main marina roads where its nothing but expensive hotels, beautiful greenery spaces, craft coffee shops, markets, etc... And we are looking at the buildings when all of a sudden we see a disheveled dude stop in front of a corner store, pull his pants down, squat, and take a giant steamer. Then he just kept walking.

And everybody else walking around just completely ignores it like it's totally normal. Its seriously like some kind of satirical dystopia movie, where you'll see guys in $3000 suits walking and talking business on the phone as they instinctively dodge piles of human s*** without even acknowledging them.

We asked around about this issue and most people told us about how none of the businesses, local or corporate/chain, have a public restroom. A lot of places have signs outside saying it. And when your city has arguably the worst homeless problem in the nation (and highest income poverty line) with a serious lack of resources/shelters but an over abundance of business, there's literally no option for homeless people who need to use the bathroom when the closest shelter is a mile or more away.
