Dec 2, 2022·1 replytrees4lifeI know MJ had Earth Song and They dont care about us but those were the exceptions, Bob Marley had Zimbabwe, Africa Unite, Who the Cap fit, Positive Vibration, Johnny Was, Pimpers Paradise, Concrete jungle, Babylon System, No woman no cry, Redemption song, Running away, exodus, iron lion zion, buffalo soldier, get up stand up, war etc....
Before MJ black artists had to beg to be on the main radio channels.
Off the Wall sold 20m copies yet for Thriller they had to write to the stations begging for them to play Beat It and more.

songwriting still great, the production is the issue. i like uprising, its his best post 73 record. i like the the other records you mentioned enough, but they do not compare to burnin, catch a fire, or especially the scratch stuff (some of the greatest music in any genre imo). production is completely neutered.
listening to exodus and comparing it with the stuff coming out of black ark at the time, the joe gibbs production, keith hudson etc. from the mid 70s, there is no comparison
i do love bob marley and the wailers though, one of my favorite artist of all time
