Everyone saying that JIK is really shallow and doesn’t really say anything or have an arc but i totally disagree, every song talks about ye’s relationship with god in a different way and all leads to a cohesive conclusion
Selah - opening track meant as a hype up track for standing up for what you believe in with clarity and focus
Follow god - about the struggles of having your feelings being pulled down from those around you while exclaiming your faith, track feels frustrated and schizophrenic to mirror the feeling of having the whole world against you
Closed on sundays - a companion track to follow god, about focusing on your own clarity of faith rather than the views of others, track is more calm and confident to reflect this
On god - kanye going through everything in his life that he attributes to god such as his status and talent and attributes any of his failings to himself through not following god
Everything we need - about being happy with what you have and not trying to chase what you don’t need just for the sake of it hence the references to adam and the apple
Water - a more abstract track that i believe tries to compare god to being something that’s formless but flows through all of us like water, overall composition and writing feels kind of flexible and unclear to reflect this
God is - yeah this is kind of just a praise track
Hands on - about the fears and uncertainties that keep people from god and how to get past them you just have to dive right in the deep end or just go all ‘hands on’
Use this gospel - a lot of the album is talking about the anxieties and pressures that keep people from god and continuously try to break someones faith, this is supposed to be a clear and concise answer on how to deal with these feelings, when in doubt “use this gospel as protection, its a hard road to heaven” clipse is the perfect example of this with no malice keeping his faith and trying to help pusha even with everything being against his faith.

if he's trying to tell a story, he's doing a s*** job at it. but if he's trying to praise and worship, he's doing a s*** job at praising and worshiping anyone, except of course. himself. so which is it?

Both i guess, though i wouldn’t really call it a “story” more of a dive into the different aspects of faith and the different responses to it
He seems to be praising god pre hard, sure he has some lines about himself on there but they are a minority, on god in particular is a song about how all his talent comes from god not himself
