Do genuinely feel for Poland and Czechia though. Neither were fascist, both got utterly f***ed by the Nazis during WWII (and Poland to a drastically lesser but still significant degree also got f***ed by the USSR during World War II), and got caught in the crossfire. I think they should have been allowed to independently charter their own courses even if it meant not becoming socialist if revolutionary conditions weren't ripe yet. I think trying to force socialism puts the system at risk
And the Czechs weren't having it with the Nazis either
assassination of Heydrich
The problem with this line of thinking is that it privileges the 45 years of communist rule in understanding these countries over the rest of their histories and even projects a post-communist understanding onto the pre-communist era, for example an entire system and way of life was also overturned - far more dramatically in fact - when communism was imposed and it also causes chaos and poverty, this is how revolutions work in the near term
Also the post is weirdly racist?
you cant really say that when communism was imposed and caused the chaos and poverty that was already there even before the communism in these areas. The chaos and poverty is what ended up causing the communist being supported, it’s not like there weren’t any communist supporters at all in these area and communism was interjected by some alien agent. These society were heavily polarized already with organic supporters for the
ideologies that existed there .

There were supporters of communism, but that doesn’t change the fact that, with the exceptions of Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and, to a degree Albania, communism only reached power because the Soviets enforced it after occupying these countries. A good example is Hungary, which in 1919-20 had a more-or-less “genuine” Revolution and a communist government which was defeated and thrown out of power (and Romanian troops occupied Budapest
). But communism as actually practiced in Hungary in 1945-89 had nothing to do with this and was the result of its defeat in World War II and occupation by the Soviets and great power politics determining that it should be in the Soviet sphere.
My point about the chaos is that if the neoliberal reforms of the 90s caused so much turbulence, surely communism with atheism, forced collectivization, forced urbanization, etc (major changes from the past) did as well - although one point in communism’s favor is that the age-old entrenched social-political-economic-cultural system it tried to uproot survived half a century of communism but has been much more harmed (IMO, they’re on the way out, and in decade or two Eastern Europe will be indistinguishable from Western Europe - this distinction wouldn’t exist if not for the insulating effects of communism/the Cold War) by 30 years of neoliberalism or capitalism or whatever - although maybe this is actually a point against communism as communism did not manage to impose its revolutionary ideals and truly effect change?
Or more to the point, I’m not saying that communism is necessarily bad because it brought chaos & poverty immediately after its establishment, but rather that revolutions inherently bring chaos & poverty, so you can’t judge a revolution (including the neoliberal ones of ‘89) as being failures because the decade after them features chaos & poverty - this is an inherent side effect of a revolutionary political change, and I imagine a communist if anyone would not immediately dismiss a revolution just due to its short term downsides
I visited UK last year and yeah ngl I was mesmerized by these roving troupes of hyena clowns
truly baffling specimens
There were still plenty of natural beauties around though
the relation of the great purge to the military must rest on the case how true were the rumours of a fifth column with the soviets, even the czech were warning the soviet government about Tukhachevsky being a nazi collaborator. The great purge ultimately did absolutely insane amount of damage to the military but you also cant win a total war without trusting the people u work with.
Also lol that the soviets would be wiped out by the Nazi the great purge made the soviets the blackest box of all, the nazis were suprised by soviet industrial capacity and lost at Stalingrad before most of the land-lease even came to play a role, the turning point where even the nazi had to admit in there propaganda there now fighting on the defensive end . The soviets did more for the west for taking forcing the nazi to move there reserves from the western front to the eastern front making it easier for an amphibian assault . The land lease did play an important role in regards to how fast the conflict would end which ultimately means amount of lives not sacrificed to the war which is one of the rare good moments in america history, but at end of the day the soviets did the heavy lifting , but back to the Nazi they were doomed from the start.
Undoubtedly some fifth column but not fking 700 thousand
And yeah wiped off the face of earth is exaggerating but I'm just saying if the Brits had folded as fast and easy as the rest of Europe, Germany probably would've been able to focus enough resources on Barbarossa and seizing the oil fields to succeed.

True, but I don't think anyone is under the impression that revolutions of any kind go super well from the jump. Even the American Revolution was down bad initially and that was a bourgeois revolution
no the prettiest eastern euro countries are Estonia, Lithuania and Poland

how does this happen every year
I feel like I avoid French films and yet

i mean no disagreement about criticism but i do disagree that much places were overtly better before soviets in eastern europe. The second polish republic was overtly anti-semitic and close to Nazi Germany and even collaborated with them during the 🇨🇿 crisis taking a city with a polish minority. Of course how much better each area differs among area but it isn’t straight these places got much worse. it’s a more complicated picture the ussr was basically an affirmative action empire and the myth of the minorities taking away resources from russian played a role in the dissolution of the ussr, a myth u often still see today within relation to majority nationality to minority nationality
To get to my main point i don’t think you can anyway institute that the relations that the soviets had with their eastern european states let’s say puppet states is anyway comparable to the west and their colonies which unleashed unspeakable amount of death and destruction of social organizations
It’s also not to say that the soviets are perfectly innocent they have done inexcusable things as well like ethnic depositions of national minorities like Kazakhs and Koreans under the excuse of national security but the soviets also provided worker rights, ethnic minorities languages being taught in schools that didn’t exist in Tsarist russia, and minorities were represented in the government
No disagreement here.
I don’t even believe those places got worse from the soviet’s myself. the reason i don’t believe it is because they still industrialised and as you say- had problems even before
critique is more based on the principle that many warsaw pact countries didn’t get a choice of orientation. That’s all really. Which doesn’t make the soviets any worse than the americans. Just an observation
The French, Germans, and Polish also deserve hate
Heard from multiple sources that polish ppl are the most racist pieces of s***s
All the Germans I’ve meet have been really kind tho unless they just wanted to steal my money

Bro was almost crying because he got good luck texts from Jonny Evans and Luke Shaw. Those fellas were probably asking him for a pic instead of the other way around.
