Should the government only back certain loans to force kids to think more about their ability to pay them back?

Conversely should you be able to lose loans via bankruptcy so that lenders are more careful about what degrees they’re lending for?

we did that with high school and it’s not really working so hot... most public schools are just a holding pen giving out As for just showing up.

I feel like uni it would be even worse

It shouldn’t, but the US framework needs to go

AUS model is perfect. Your spot is subsidised by the government and you pay back the debt at essentially nil interest, once you start earning a certain amount

But some examples where education at all levels are either free or heavily subsidized to the point where you barely have to pay anything would be Germany, Norway, Sweden, France, Cuba

this idea depends on 18 year olds having the foresight and maturity to understand which degrees/majors are unlikely to have a positive return on investment - suggest this is unlikely

ultimately it is their choice and they should face the consequences

i certainly reject the idea that the taxpayer should be subsidising an education in south east asian balloon blowing or what have you

Shouldn't have to take any courses outside of your major/minor in the first place. F*** all that "well-rounded" bullcrap they be spewing.

Nah if governments/lender only got paid when somebody could pay it bad they’d only give loans for engineering students etc and they’d pull loans if you were slacking off

So it wouldn’t really be up to the 18 year old that’s the point. They’d have to decide if they want to pay out of pocket to master in Starbucks barista or get a degree on “the list”

Ah yes you're right it wouldn't work nationwide because the US has more people per capita

  • Dec 23, 2019

the only reason why the us economy is strong is because of its ability to generate so much debt and not incur any loss. who tf can pay these debts when the federal government keeps increasing its debt ceiling? point is, as long as the economy is dependent on debt to survive, education in the us will never be free

This just seems like turbo capitalism.

It also means the arts would be essentially reserved for the rich and could undo a lot of recent effort to unwhitewash art and criticism.
