This is something that I was thinking about after Taylor won Album of the Year a few weeks ago. I think everyone, even the most diehard of Swifties, would agree that her winning felt more like acknowledgement for The Eras Tour and the massive year she had in 2023 more than it really felt like an award for Midnights.

The same can be argued for 2023's ceremony, where it felt less like a win for Harry's House and moreso a win for Harry Styles's 2022, and even some voters anonymously echoed sentiments regarding that idea.

Which got me thinking: should the Grammys introduce an Artist of the Year award? What would that look like? I think the criteria could include things like tours, performance, impact, longevity, etc. and I think that artists who didn't drop an album should still be eligible for the award if they managed to have a successful year without one. It would be a way to award an artist who had a super successful year without just handing them Album of the Year to do so. There would for sure be some years where there is overlap and the same artist wins both awards, but I think it would differentiate more often that it would align.

Here are some winners I would have for recent years so you get a better idea of where I'm coming from (the year is the ceremony, so the award is for all work the previous year):

    2024: Taylor Swift
    2023: Bad Bunny
    2022: Olivia Rodrigo
    2021: The Weeknd
    2020: Ariana Grande
    2019: Drake
    2018: Kendrick Lamar/Bruno Mars
    2017: Beyonce
    2016: Taylor Swift

Would you like to see the Grammys incorporate some sort of award like this?
