As a former VPN at school myspace user. I defend the children's rights to bypass school blocks to use their socials instead of paying attention in class.

So we can get around the big, beautiful firewall on the southern border

  • Because no way kids just lie about their age when signing up for accounts, doesn’t happen at all

  • agreed

true, and the government not gonna put all that effort into investigating every vpn user anyways.

They won't but they will go after people doing stuff they aren't supposed to. Better hope that VPN service isn't keeping up with logs or is not willing to hand them over. Its not that hard to trace things back to who it was.

Also, hosting your own VPN service through AWS, Azure, etc. defeats the purpose of hiding your traffic because that IP will lead back to your host that is under your name anyway. You could just find a host that wouldn't disclose that information, but if you're doing something shady most are gonna give you up pretty quick.

Most higher level firewalls are blocking proxy sites and VPN services by default.

Your ISP does know if you're using a VPN and what VPN you are using. netflow/ipflow/jflow has this information for the most part. Most VPN providers IP ranges are well known

An actual federal agent interrogated me because some bullies claimed that I was manipulating grades on this website that was created by the government to show parents their kids grade. I think it was called edline or something.

One day the IT guy, the school cop and the principal showed up at my class and took me to the server room and a whole ass fed with the suit and all was there and going over my history of using vpns and proxy sites and asking me what I was doing with them. They went through all the files of games I hid on the schools shared network. In the end they didn’t believe me fully so they revoked my access to the internet and took me out of IT class and the school musical and any extra curriculum activities. The craziest part was they never told my parents about any of it.

I moved across the country anyways the next year so it didn’t impact me much but I totally forgot about that whole incident until now.

  • they should teach the little ones in elementary how to be private and secure online.

Damn this sounds like some movie s***. That's crazy as hell. Especially not telling your parents lmao

  • Lmao trust me age restriction would have not stopped 14 year old me from anything like that.

  • worldpeace

i know but thats not my point, the point is people can run their own so checking ids or credit cards information or whatever will not do anything

Damn, I wish they did this when I was 14. Woulda forced me to learn Linux earlier
