oh no, Paul Schrader falling victim to the reactionary "let more people (re: women) vote - must be 'woke'" rhetoric. Sad to see, especially from the writer of Taxi Driver

talking about "who counts the votes" and increased voting opportunities like some sort of conservative pundit. not sure what his understanding of democracy is

Calling it reactionary is bizarre. Whether you dislike his particular terminology or not—his actual observation is correct. Anyone with eyes, even the most progressive people I know online in film circles have pointed out that it’s transparently obvious why Jeanne Dielman ended up the number 1 film. One of the greatest film writers of all time is not some conservative pundit for pointing what’s blatantly happening.

There is no Howard Hawks or Terrence Malick on the list, it’s embarrassing. Pretending like Get Out made it on there for any sincere reason over anything from either of those filmmakers is insane. It’s a blumhouse movie made by a bootleg Shyamalan.

transparent of what? People recognizing that a feminist work of art can be just as universal as an existential or modernist or antiwar or gangster epic or whatever other stuff that usually gets placed #1? Transparent of the obvious fact that a changed voting pool will result in a changed list result?

His language strongly matches that of conservative reactionaries, and he invited the label when he started making bizarre comments about democracy, wokism, and allowing more voters.

No one who voted before doesn’t think that a feminist work of art has merit alongside previous masterworks of the canon. They’re just self aware enough to know that this particular one isn’t magically better than any of the previous films to make it to the top. Voters throwing it in their top ten this time is an obvious move to try and make broader appeals rather than an honest expression of their taste.

So, what particular one would that be, arbitrator of taste? I AM legitimately curious, especially since this one placed the highest on their previous poll. Also: people only talk how you do when people praise stuff by non-whitemen, I see it all the time on literature and film boards. This is the unfortunate burden all non-whitemale critics and creatives have to face. There's always an agenda when their stuff gets placed next to the great white men. It's never a simple matter of different tastes that are finally getting due recognition. I'm glad I'm not deluded enough to treat the movies like some objective science where a POLL produced the wrong results somehow. Unless evidence comes of vote tampering this discourse is ridiculous, clearly reflecting the mindset of people who think the world revolves around their taste.

Let me ask this more clearly—do you legitimately believe in your heart there was just this organic mass realization among voters this year that Jeanne Dielman ought to jump up to the top of the list and that isn’t a reflection of a climate in which they feel more compelled to?

oh, so you don't actually have a different movie to suggest like the previous comment implied? I'm really surprised, truly. I'm sure it's just waiting to appear, probably never

To me it's just the fact that it's an insanely slow 3-hour movie where barely anything happens (not true but people will see it that way) which makes it inaccessible for like 98% of film goers who expect to have some entertainment along with their art. If Elaine May somehow landed the number one spot I would be ecstatic.

I'm gonna ignore this and go back to your originate question: "Let me ask this more clearly—do you legitimately believe in your heart there was just this organic mass realization among voters this year that Jeanne Dielman ought to jump up to the top of the list and that isn’t a reflection of a climate in which they feel more compelled to?"

I do not believe there was an 'organic mass realization.' I believe that more people voted for the movie after it already placed high on the previous list. I mean, the results spell that out clearly. I do not think anyone felt 'compelled' to, if you mean by force. I'm pretty sure individual critic lists aren't even publicized? Anyone voting can share their selections if they want. Also, your comment seems to imply that any evaluation of art that is influenced by one's context (their 'climate' if you will) is somehow an inauthentic response? I'm sorry, but unfortunately that's not the way that culture works. Art evaluation has always and will always be influenced by the cultural mood of the time.

Threads like these is when niggas pretentious side comes out. Stop acting above others just cause niggas wanted to see Tarantino or Coens on this list. Movies isn’t just about new French wave or watching a lady peel a potato for 10 minutes.

Niggas really be all in their feelings cause a mofo top 5 is TDK, Pulp Fiction, T2, Jurassic Park, and Interstellar.

Would you balk if Stalker or Satantango got placed 1? Also, I don't think voters for these polls evaluate movies the way 98% of filmgoers do, but surely you already know this

I'd be cool if Elaine May was #1 too but I also know the same exact response, if not worse, would take place from people complaining about 'agendas' and the such

Hilarious to be like “I’m gonna ignore the answer to the question I repeatedly asked you.” Oh and of course I didn’t mean by force, give me a f***ing break. I don’t really see this discourse producing anything healthy going forward—so I’m gonna leave it that.

I would balk I'm the one that tells everybody they shouldn't watch Stalker first because it's so slow. Admit I don't know who this list is aimed at but JD is in the upper echelon of "pretentious" snob territory and alot of people of any gender that check it out will guaranteed be like "fucking film nerds".

You're probably right alot of people would still complaining if it was Elaine.
