Nah, but I’d love to get around to it. Touki Bouki was the first thing I saw by the director and its veery cool.
Do you recall Hyenes as surreal or more of a grounded, narratively straightforward movie? Asking because Touki Bouki was way more abstract than I expected
its abstract in its meaning but the storytelling is pretty straightforward. Its funny and I do remember a few surreal visual moments while watching but not too much.
came here looking for Denis
they be overrating citizen kane on s&s lol.. bit surprised its only 3rd this time
I am excited to watch Touki Bouki too, should try and find it actually been on my list for a while. Have you seen Hyenas (1992) yet? @op I loved that one!
Was blown away by Hyenas I loved it much more that Touki Bouki (which was still great)
the restoration quality is unreal. Diop has a couple other short films from the 90s (both around 40 min long) that looks similarly amazing
My List:
La Notte (1961)
Belle de Jour (1967)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Shining (1980)
Repo Man (1984)
Blue Velvet (1986)
Heathers (1988)
Goodfellas (1990)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Beau Travail in the top ten?
And i liked the movie a lot for what it was. But top 10 of all time!?!? lmaoooo
trying to shorten my all time list into just 10 films made me physically ill
The Passion Of Joan Of Arc (1928)
A Matter Of Life & Death (1946)
Ugetsu (1953)
Night Of The Hunter (1955)
The Searchers (1956)
The Seventh Seal (1957)
2001 (1968)
Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)
Mirror (1975)
The Master (2012)
My List:
La Notte (1961)
Belle de Jour (1967)

The Shining (1980)

Pained me to omit Rosemarys Baby
The planets aligned in '57 and '68
I've seen a lot of these already but Ima do a deep rewatch here soon (probably with the criterion challenge)...Idk I just never got the hype for films like Citizen kane and 2001. 2001 is definitely a gorgeous film when it gets to the space segment and I did enjoy it, but it's not even my favorite Kubrick film...Im a wayyyyy bigger fan of Dr. Strangelove.
(Please note that I'm not saying those are bad films, I'm saying I never got the hype in regards to them being praised as top 5 films of all time)
Also don't get me started on s*** like "stalker"
Even though a lot of folks on here have shared the same opinion about stalker being a bore, I still can't understand how it's so hyped up by "cinephiles" and makes a top 100 list of all time movies.
I think I'm one of the most well-rounded users on here when it comes to film, meaning I enjoy the "pretentious" criterion s*** and even have a decent collection of films, I enjoy dumbass blockbusters like MCU, and I enjoy the "typical" top 10 classics like Goodfellas and Pulp fiction. So let me say theres no universe where a movie like beau travail, stalker or persona is being placed higher than Goodfellas and Pulp fiction in my personal top 10. And I f***in loved beau and persona, but not more than Pulp and good.
Also the fact that Bicycle thieves and do the right thing isn't top 5 is crazy to me as well.
F*** it lemme give my top 10 too:
Pulp fiction
Godfather
Do the right thing
Bicycle thieves
High and low
Goodfellas
Dr. Strangelove
The dark knight
There will be blood
Paid in full
(Yes you read correctly, #10 is Paid in full)
I would go with:
Stalker
Lawrence of Arabia
There Will Be Blood
Once Upon A Time in The West
Barry Lyndon
Seven Samurai
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
Vertigo
Hero
The Revenant
I would go with:
Stalker
Lawrence of Arabia
There Will Be Blood
Once Upon A Time in The West
Barry Lyndon
Seven Samurai
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
Vertigo
Hero
The Revenant
didn't have to go that hard
