I really don't care for Rashomon that much really
happy to see it drop a bit on the list

throne of blood, hidden fortress and sanjuro (yes, I put this above yojimbo and I put fistful of dollars over yojimbo, come get these hands if you wanna talk about it)

i like sanjuro more than yojimbo too. sanjuro rocks.

I know man, I just wanted to make sure I didn't give that impression in general to whoever's reading, I'm more of an 'overcorrect to ensure I'm not misinterpeted later' guy because I hate explaining my words based on misunderstandings

And yeah Birth is horrible, from the second half onwards it feels like outright nazi propaganda, my critical faculties just stop working in the face of how disgusting it is

Interesting take for real, I definitely would rank him highly among silent directors, his best scenes have a real power to the for me, who are some of your fave silent filmmakers? Got into Gance recently and found Napoleon incredible even if the weird romantic comedy section felt out of place, guy was living in the future

    top 10 silent filmmakers;

    Murnau
    Lang
    Keaton
    Browning
    Sjostrom
    Sternberg
    Stroheim
    Lloyd
    Dreyer
    Dovzhenko

    Beale Street better?

To me, definitely. Some of the purest love I’ve seen in a movie

For how heartbreaking the premise is, it’s extremely sweet & imo not as painful as people say.

the absolute best macbeth adaptation, I haven't seen the coens' yet though

the swordplay is excellent even with that limited research they had in the 70s

I gave up watching the Coen’s one without subtitles after 30 minutes. Polanski’s one is great

You won’t see them on these lists for another 20-30 years honestly

Most of these filmmakers aren’t going to pick s*** from filmmakers as old as them or younger

I also know a lot of the older filmmakers don’t really respect Tarantino. I remember many of them didn’t like Pulp Fiction because they felt like it was somebody just making a collage out of their work.

I'd legit say Scorsese is our greatest living filmmaker but also wouldn't put any of his movies in my list, he's really really good though

seven samurai is goated but i dont understand why rashomon is the other kurosawa rep on this list. is it just the narrative structure and how groundbreaking it was? He's got a bunch of better movies. I can see Yojimbo and Sanjuro are actiony movies and don't fit but i'd expect high & low, ikiru, throne of blood, dreams over rashomon..

Rashomon is quite singular in it's structure and visual language + the entire set-up is rather intriguing imo and far from generic. + it's just so well executed. Definitely one of the Top Kurosawa films imo.
