Hard to argue with that, Andrei Rublev would be #1 on my list, Nosferatu doesn't do anything for me really but you can tell it left a huge impact on him
Me neither I just see a point scored for Murnau
i just watched it last month during a 24h film marathon and I literally just enjoyed the dialogue until 40 minutes in (so pretty much while they were plotting about how to infiltrate their household).
the s***scene between the rich couple was funny too but that was about it
i'd rather watch chabrol's la cérémonie 10 times before I rewatch parasite. handmaiden also ran during that marathon and I liked that way more lol, so there's definitely better korean films out there. I think the way it swooped both oscars and cannes there was some mental obligation to pick that parasite over another bong film or another korean
Parasite > Handmaiden imo that one felt more construed tbh
I think Mother is Bong's best, but I will say that he's the king of the 9/10, I'd give over half of his movies that rating, he hasn't hit 10 yet for me but he can give you that 9/10 feeling like no-one else
i like the host the best. but tbh i dont have much of a gap between parasite, MoM, mother and host...love all of them. he is consistently great
Robert Eggers
Andrei Rublev
The Elephant Man
Seven Samurai
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Apocalypse Now
2001: A Space Odyssey
Nosferatu (1922)
Fitzcarraldo
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Persona
Fitzcarraldo is a great Herzog choice. Everything with them pulling the ship is just… some of the most MASSIVE s*** I’ve seen put to the screen. I need to see the making-of documentary at some point, Burden of Dreams

Strong agree, on lack of 10 but LOTS to offer. Would say the same about Kelly Reichardt, well just to name current, well established directors w/ hype who haven’t hit peak form yet (hopefully)
Memories Of Murder > Mother > Parasite > the rest
Memories of Murder on paper totally sounds like my kinda movie but I was mostly bored watching it tbh
Favorite Bong is The Host and Parasite. Havent seen Mother yet.
Parasite got the woke/reactionary buzz right now so it's not surprising. Real ones know its by far Bong's worst movie
parasite is overrated as hell imo
too obvious in its plot and idea but thats exactly why mainstream audience love it

Frenzy
It’s great. Teases at what Hitchcock would have been doing if he had born a few decades later.

I love some of those later Hitchcock films, Frenzy included, just surprised that Tarr has that much love for it.

I’m more shocked there’s no Tarkovsky on their list.

I was definitely expecting Stalker as the first 40 minutes are what Tarr put into his films.

that docu has been on the back burner for so long
now i regret getting rid of my herzog box set
What do u value then? Those two things are a big part of acting
You know, I should take that back bc I DO like charming actors. Setsuko Hara & Giulietta Masina being two examples. And I actually do like Jimmy Stewart in the Hitchcock movies, I guess he’s just not necessarily the reason I come, but rather a very satisfying supplement.
Perhaps the roles I especially value deliver a different sort of magnetism, a certain neuroticism, thinking back to Bibi Andersson in Persona or Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher, where Huppert is more nasty, cold, even repulsive in a way, than charismatic. I’m more likely to be taken back when someone is given the chance to perform almost something like an embodied unraveling of the mind.

Frenzy
Berlin Alexanderplatz
I been hating on it since I first saw it. It's not a BAD movie but for the quality that Bong is known for (and especially the crazy praise this saw), it was so disappointing.
This is crazy. So there’s actually people that exist in this world that believes Okja is better than Parasite
Parasite > Handmaiden imo that one felt more construed tbh
Agreed. I love handmaiden but Parasite got it for me
