This is just dumb because if we couldn’t think for ourselves, wouldn’t we be gassing up Parasite just as much with all the love it’s gotten from audiences, critics and film historians?
Don’t apply it so literally, I’m talking about when it comes to the regarded “classics” the “greatest of all time” films. I don’t expect you to love every single movie that gets praised.
Props to @TheReal212 for not getting in his feelings and just having a debate over disagreements.
Elric for some reason gets emotional whenever I question someone acting pretentious to look cool on the internet. If it don’t apply let it fly
I really don’t see this at all. X is much closer to those mean spirited 2000’s horror films you’re referring to than anything released in the last decade outside of what Zombie put out. I don’t think it’s any artsier than Carrie. I think you’re maybe projecting the A24 sensibilities onto it. The fact that it’s a slasher playing things straight but meticulously crafted is what makes it refreshing.
Yeah I meant it has that 2000s horror slasher template but then it’s doing these random faux artsy aesthetic shots in between and trying to drag out a first hour that is mostly a bunch of unresolved nonsense.
Also the kills were just lame tbh. Feel like there wasn’t anything visceral here compared to the 2000s horror slashers it tries to be. Nothing as squirmy as watching a murderer snip someone’s ankles or even as batshit insane as that trailer scene in Hills have Eyes. It’s just so plain and boring but using random aesthetic shots in between to look artsy

Well I don’t like The Seventh Seal or Dr. Strangelove as some examples of “classics”
Psycho bored me hard too tbh
which one out of parasite, get out, and portrait of a lady do you think has the best chance of making it to the next list?
i doubt we see all 3 of those again
portrait of a lady is here to stay.

Lmao that’s crazy cus Dr Strangelove my favorite Kubrick film
Didn't like any of them but I would say Get Out has the best chance. It is easily the most distinct out of them and Jordan Peele has been having a great career since (Sciamma hasn't fallen off by any means but she went way under the map since and Bong is going Hollywood af since)
Sciamma put out a great (& similarly praised) movie just last year..
Lmao that’s crazy cus Dr Strangelove my favorite Kubrick film
I feel like everyone I know loves every Kubrick film and I dislike Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange
My fav is prob The Shining or Eyes Wide Shut
Gotta still see Barry Lyndon though

Yeah we’re just on totally different wavelengths about this I guess. I thought every one of the elements you’re describing as lame or lesser was actually incredibly effective. It’s all in the beauty of different taste.

Yeah but it’s no where as talked about as Portrait, even among the film snobs who hype her up. Compared to that, Peele actually managed to translate critical acclaim into becoming a genuinely big filmmaker that audiences want to see movies from.

Was petite maman praised like that? I thought it was great but thought it flew under the radar
I know it has great reviews just didn’t see as many ppl talking about it like with Portrait

See I can agree that eyes wide shut is criminally underrated and I might like it more than Clockwork
Alright gang let’s go through the Licorice Pizza discourse again
Lmaooo let’s not. You already see what user loves constantly mentioning my name

I didn’t know you were involved in that stuff lol.

Yeah that’s why he “hates me”…i was the guy itt saying PTA was weird for defending the stuff in his movie

Portrait of a Lady wasn’t a mainstream crossover and I don’t think there’s anything wrong w her not being that kind of director… plenty aren’t. They aren’t similar directors at all

It wasn’t but it’s wayyy more “mainstream” in comparison to petite

Never said there’s anything wrong with that. The convo was about which of the movies is most likely to show up in this list down the line. Most of the movies that are picked have a lot of cultural impact and that usually does come from filmmakers who are big names and talked about for decades. It’s a lot more likely Peele will be the most talked about from the 3 due to how he’s carried his career since

Idk if Bong knocks it out the park again with his next film he’s not going anywhere either. But idk how he’s gonna do with an adaptation

That’s fair but I can also see Parasite being seen as what Burning or Handmaiden were seen as a few years ago. I feel like western tendencies tend to gas up a big Korean movie every couple years and then we forget the ones before that we’re getting gassed up

Will that apply to Bong tho? Outta the new guys he probably is the most consistent with getting really good reviews and he has a decent amount of popularity to him. I’d argue ppl today know Bongs movies more than Lee and Park.
Plus factoring in all those Oscar wins, that comes wit a permanent buzz.
Also factor in Bong doesn’t only make Korean films, so that makes him more memorable when you working with ppl like Chris evans, Pat rob, Tilda, Jake, etc.

Like I definitely agree that traditional Korean movies do get treated like that, but when Bong announces Pat Rob is in his next flick plus coming off all those Oscar wins, I think it’s safe to say he’s the exception
