Why do you underestimate his musical ear? In his era he was groundbreaking, he's a fan of Free Jazz and in the same interview where he named Lil Baby he talks about how complex Coltrane was.

Rakim and the other OG's have been naming Nas, Jay and Eminem as their favorite "new" rappers for like 20 years. In the last few years some of them have also added Kendrick to the list and sometimes Cole. That's pretty much it.

It's rare to find an older legend like Mos Def who's more attuned to the core of hip hop.
