the words of someone who definitely hasn't played sh3 or 4

Most are saying the same thing and leaving out 3 and 4

The general consensus so far is that it’s the best since 2.

second playthrough is super intriguing so far, I was wondering if that note about the buried sword would mean anything lol

playing on hard was a blast, i felt like I was barely winning each fight. This time I’m gonna try story difficulty but increase the puzzles to “lost in the fog” so that I breeze through combat but spend more time on the puzzles/exploration

2’s too generational to directly compare. Not fair to the other game

Just finished in a little over 9 hours on hard combat & lost in the fog puzzle difficulty. Overall I'd say this was like a 6.5. Story-wise it's actually one of the better ones I've gone through in recent memory, found it to be well realized and I liked the intertwining of what we know as Silent Hill lore with Japanese mythology, and worthy of being in the same franchise as the classics. If the NG+ adds a lot of substantial new content I might go up half a point.

Now where f falters to me is the gamey portion. Despite being on the shorter side, the game started feeling like a slog barely halfway in. I found the core combat mechanics straight up bad, bordering on something you might see from some random game tagged 'soulslike' on steam, made by an ambitious small dev team. I dont think its even that hard or smth, its just very rough around the edges, maybe it's my playstyle but most of the time you're in a mexican standoff with some monster 15 centimeters apart, just waiting to get a counter attack in. They kinda shake it up at one point with some new abilities, but after the novelty factor wore off, I didn't consider it to be a substanial enough addition. The game also has 5 or 6 enemy variations which are repeated ad nauseum and quickly overstay their welcome, even in such a short game. The bosses were meh, some cool designs but nothing to write home about. In the opening hours, when you're light on supplies and fragile, the enemy placement and level design accommodate your fight or flight mechanisms, but that stops being the case around the mid point. The last hour or so before the end I found especially bad, its just one gauntlet after another.

The levels also I didnt find that interesting. The only standout is the school (and maybe Hinako's house) and I wager that is because it most closely follows the blueprint of a traditional SH dungeon, albeit on a much smaller scale. During the first half you get the illusion that there's some non-linearity in there, that there are things off the beaten path in the town worth scouring and hunting for, but the truth is that most likely 30 mins later you'll be funneled through those same places either way. The puzzle sections I found to be decent, they start off strong, there's a few head scratchers, but in the second half they focus even more on the combat, and the few puzzles that are in there are mostly the same in principle.

Other than that, I found the music to be a good mood setter in the moment, but nothing too memorable, the credits track was nice. Art-wise the game is sick, particularly the last few levels there are heaps of cool visual moments, very beautiful in a grotesque way of course. Oh also for a SH game I didnt find it to be very scary, f***ed up and gory - yeah, but scary - naaah.

    Sorry for the essay.

they probably mean that’s what the completion time is, which obviously subtracts a bunch of your playtime, according to my ps5 I have 34 hours played but I’m only 20 hours into my save so they subtract a lot

final save says 9, steam 10.7. The game seems to be made with NG+ in mind, but if you're on the fence wait for a sale imo.
