though tbh that list isn't great, they played that "we support Black women embracing their sexuality" thing even more annoyingly than P4k (the "and we also like the charts!" too). But #1 and #2 are coo

He liked Sage's post on IG about 1491 but that's about it. He's definitely been busy in the studio for sure though

Wow Moor Mother with the big look, well deserved.

Can’t believe I didn’t see Negro on more lists, thats how I know the staff writers are slacking big f***in time

Agree, Moor Mother had a crazy year.

And yeah according to aoty.org Fader was the only other publication who put it on a list (at 11), rly weird since it was obviously capturing the zeitgeist so well.

Also highest of keys BbyMutha would have deserved all the acclaim WAP didn't tbh

Right, I FINALLY got a chance a couple hours ago to give this my first listen. My initial impressions as follows.

It's a great album. Definitely more in line with what I wanted from him than Ada Irin was. Where I felt hesitant putting that in my top 20 rap releases of the year, this one will certainly make it. The loops are hypnotic, his writing is sharp as ever and the length is nice, its a full meal. Great winter album too, needed these vibes.

Highlights to me were: Tired, Certainty, Self Harm, Aunt Gerry's Fried Chicken.

However, do have some critiques. By and large it plays it a little too safe. Could have done with the odd beat switch or something a little more experimental in there. It just could do with some more dynamism at times and kinda flows at an even keel. Coupled with his straightforward writing style and it lacks a little bit of edge imo; never really leaves you surprised in the way that albums like BRASS, Cain, Shrines and Dont Play It Straight do. Also maybe lacks the cohesion and sequencing of those very best albums of the year. A bit like RAFT by Akai in that sense, a great set of tracks but not necessarily purposefully put together.

It is very good though, a strong step forward, but his magnum opus is still to come. Higher Self also remains his best ever track and his EP's + Soul Golden are arguably more interesting works.

Can see that, think we'll more likely get a feature from him though. Expecting some Alchemist and Animoss production. My outside the box feature guess would be billy woods.

This is by far his best work. Higher Self is probably his most accessible song so that's why it gives the impression of being his best track, which you wouldn't be wrong in saying that, but this album has alot more gut wrenching lines and soul baring than he's done before. It's very focused and hes expanded the way he approaches different topics and references.

I didn't say it ain't his best. Just arguably not as interesting as his early ep's were sonically. And yeah as I said his writing is as sharp as ever.

Personally this grabbed me more than what he's done in the past, besides soul golden and from the heart. Although the rest are good tapes, they just sort of exist and dont really go anywhere intriguing

That's fair, its all subjective. I know I ain't alone in holding those early Ep's to a high bar. I just always feel there's some special, intangible quality captured in those imperfect early projects. No doubt though that this is definitely a more polished and superior project. But it's a bit like Earl and Solace. There's something there in the rough, off-kilter-ness of it which is near impossible to replicate imo. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing, just is what it is and each project still stands for itself.

Yeah those SoundCloud tracks were special and I still rather put Ada as an EP personally. Haven't listened to it since February

Very agreeable except that I wouldn't say Soul Golden is still "more interesting". I think the production on here has a lot going for it with subtle jazzy touches going a long way (and obviously the sampling is pure brilliance). It's not really comparable with the all out-there experimental stuff from the likes of woods tbh and on some level it feels a bit like judging him for things he wasn't going for, but tbch I would've appreciated some more experimental approaches to song or album structure as well.

Also agree it still feels like he hasn't reached his full potential yet, even though this def feels like the best showcase for his vision of rap yet. Hopefully the MIKE collab is still coming! That one will quite surely satisfy our wish for a more cutting sound
