What do yall thinks Mike's best verse is?
Fortune teller imo raps wise
emotionally theres way too f***ing many man idk
Well we can approach that idea from a couple angles
As a conceptual exercise, this is a journey of personal development wrapped inside of a fake movie inside of a Low End Theory-style guided audio museum tour. We move from the abstract to the personal very quickly in this album and that is a testament to MIKE knowing how much artifice is enough vs. too much
Sound-wise, production-wise, MIKE’s never sounded fuller. This melds the professional sheen of Beware of the Monkey with the purposefully sluggish and introspective beat style that got him shine in the first place seamlessly and expands his horizons in every direction. A classic MIKE song sounds like you’re walking somewhere uphill in the snow both ways, but like a lot of others have noted he’s much less lugubrious in sound and lyrical content these days, and allowing more moods into his sound palate brings a variety that still seems cohesive. Plus dude doing so much here, you’re getting songs that start like a classic Slums-type beat and segue into Madlib/Dilla shifting tempo experiments. You’ve got a sunny, Alchemist-esque synth loop that Larry June floats over melting into a Radiohead song. You get some f***in hard-ass loops, you get sound collage, you get some s*** that sounds like Clams Casino would sample it to make a beat
Lyrically I feel like he’s barring the f*** out (first and foremost) and operating at his highest level of writing while simultaneously being the most accessible he’s ever been. You can become a MIKE fan from this album if you’ve never heard him or any of the s*** he influenced before. I don’t think that’s super easy to do. MIKE is really giving Earl a run for that poet laureate of rap title on this one
thanks for the thoughtful response. i can see where you're coming from
El Cousteau just posted the Burning Desire Vinyl on his story gatefold looks Cleeeeaaaan gotta have it
revisited Burning Desire and yea this s*** fire. was never the biggest Mike fan and his albums never connected with me but this one HIT. might have to go back and relisten to his other ones with new ears
Idk if I said this already but Pacific Yew would be a nice addition to the roster

He plays instruments, produces, sings (kinda) and just started rapping. His music has a very warm, watery psychedelic tone to it
one of the better beats from this yr
This is the first year I can remember that I bumped MIKE heavily in the whip
please ignore the Tecca
