on my seventh listen reading along, some fav lines:

I got my mother's laugh, grinnin' through a bunch of bad s***

This ain't pleadin' words, it's truths that I needed heard

I tried to scribe it, don't really think the words do exist

Scribble off the sad s*** 'cause it's all the same s***

All alone but it took me the farthest

You talk the grind until your kids, put your trust in the host
They try to bribe us with the myth that we lucky we close
It wasn't like you to begin, you be frontin' for sure

I'm a lover with regret, I never picked the hate

I'm only diving when it's deep
Searching for that peace when I'm coming down

Sometimes I'd rather just be wrong than to settle with it
    (been a fav)

Def a grower, enjoying this a lot rn. Atm a 9/10 to me

Can't say yet how I'd compare it with his other classics, needs to sit for a bit longer, it's def another one in his insanely consistent run tho.

Interesting. Off my first listen I thought the opposite, that this is his most cohesive.

I think "distinct" would have probably been a better word for what I meant. WiMP and Renaissance Man have the most distinct sound of all Mike albums to me, in context of his entire work.

MGBYH established a certain sound which I'd call the trademark Mike sound, and this album seems a very natural progression of that. I think part of me was hoping based off Numbered Dayz and Nothin2Say that he'd go into a kind of electronic direction with this which set some false expectations.

Not even saying distinct means better btw, I've come to enjoy MGBYH more than Renaissance Man already

Everything about allstar some of my favorite lines on the whole album

"Try and tell you that we safe but we keep dyin"

"Why do grieving in the bed be the best option"

"Middle school I moonlit as a arson, I'm finished tryna ruin what I start
I'm through with tryna barter for remorse, sabotagin"

Looks like the art Sideshow did for Earl's Whole World track. Prefer the bandcamp one too.

  • Jun 22, 2020

I like all 3 tbh, but the bandcamp one definitely captures the vibe best
