Had Mavis project for a while but never really sat down with it. Had a wild hair to see if he had any videos the other day and used this thread title to find out about Mike. Only got his new project so is his old s*** better?

basically everything MIKE since 2017 (May God Bless Your Hustle) is fire, for me and others itt his 2020 releases are also for sure among his best but it's debatable because there's so many great projects.

Def recommend checking out MGBYH, very important milestone for this movement and still pretty unique. The other one I'd recommend when you're new to him is War in My Pen which was released right after SRS

These are a lot of different artists and unique styles, its natural to have your preferred ones

The OP title has kinda become reductive considering the scope of all these artists and their work. Though I see why we still categorise it as that.

Nevertheless, its why when people pose the question as to where do I get started it's pretty trivial and almost impossible to answer 'successfully'.

Oh yeah, skipped my mind before to post, but MAVI posted in his insta story last night something along the lines of 'next time you hear from me it'll be album talk'.

Smh why do people do this

tbh I think it's coming from a good place of wanting to spread love for the sampled artist. But yea ppl rly need to get informed not to do this in the youtube comments when it's a small artist.

Kinda torn on this topic cause on one hand I feel like it's very important to give sources and credit and it should be public material, but the business reality of it is of course that sample artists get exploited by copyright lawyers nowadays. Had a loong discussion about this with Slauson on twitter lol, he's convinced it's violent colonialism and everyone who disagrees is stupid

yea it's kinda frustrating to put a label on this because while rooted in hip-hop this movement really goes beyond genre barriers even

but labels eventually are what makes this recognizable and help the artists get exposure, and slums fits the trademark muddy sound SRS popularized. I put a + on there at least to show it's not just that. Open to other suggestions tho

Also just took out Ade from the title and put in Keiyaa and Akai instead, Ade just been disappointing on many levels for a while now

Yeah of course, not suggesting you're like way off the mark or anything, still seems the most viable label to me too.

pink siifu's slwdwn tapes are some of the best tapes ive heard since screw himself

nah fr probably my favorite thing about screw’s mixes were how he played with the track’s pitch and how low-fi or crunchy the audio would sound. i guess the effect was lost when his successors (swishahouse, chopstars, noir ect) started digitally processing their mixes. sgp’s chopped by purrp/purrpped & chopped/veneno tapes and siifu’s have been the only ones i know of who brought that back im grateful af i might have to tell him on twitter lol
