This
2010 artists like Sean, Meek, and Wale who are past their prime need to go indie and partner with Empire.
The mainstream system is no longer checking for them and Empire is a good
avenue to do your own thing.

No
Sean was independent for a bit before going back to Def Jam for this album.
Independent even w/Empire or some other distribution is almost never better than signing with a label unless you bring nothing to the table
I actually believe Sean on this.
I believe that over the course of the 4 years making this album, part of the delay was the first week sales. It's not like he didn't try in the years leading up to this album. They pressed the button on that Hit Boy EP and that record with Durk and Tiller.
Nothing has been connecting, and it became clear that he's past his commercial peak.
It takes a lot to generate the right environment to get those big looks. Sean is not Cole / Drake / Kendrick, where they don't really need the look to sell well in their first week.
He's never sold well w/o the big look and it was very obvious that commercially he was past his prime. So rather than try and re-engineer something that isn't present anymore, do what you do now, feed your base and take a grassroots approach.
