No lie, I'm looking forward like the second coming of Jesus.
Can you imagine the music we'll be getting with Abel with full artistic freedom? Cash will finally relate to Steve Berman from 20 years ago when he was managing the angry blonde that was Eminem (we might even get a similar skit lmao)
(09-March-2022 update) Well what do you know? A leak that proves my idea!
(pic sourced from a recent leak of the album notes of Dawn FM, before release)
At the bottom of the first pic it says
"Keep 14-16 tracks (label)"
If what I read is correct, here's a reminder, concrete proof that the final say in his projects isn't up to him, but to the label.
To some may come as a surprise, like discovering Santa isn't real.
Labels didn't let Michael go free, what made you think The Weeknd would be treated better lmao
That's why I still say Abel needs to go independent to have 100% control and artistic freedom. Until then, he will never have complete control over his music.
Here's what quite probably went down in Republic higher ups office with that Wendy Goldstein b**** and the other Scrooge McDuck execs in Republic in the meeting they held with Abel for the finished 2014 super-drugged-out Nirvana vibe album(s)

Abel already owns his masters tho and honestly probably already has complete artistic freedom

Maybe he does, maybe that's PR talk, no one can say for sure but as long as he's under Republic it doesn't matter.
One thing's for certain though, if the day ever comes where he'll be independent, it would be glorious. I mean, he'll still drop pop music, and that's more than fine. But also there won't be other episodes like "The Hills" where the board of Republic was the against the release of the track, luckily Monte Lipman happened to like some of Abel's mixtape era songs, that gave him the green light.
So the classic deal is 7 albums. With an EP, Trilogy, and two best of-s, how does it work? Who can properly calculate how many albums remaining?

It’s funny how direct quotes such as “this is the album I’ve always wanted to make” are completely ignored
Weeknd in deep to the label machine, he'll probably never leave the Universal umbrella. he also has no reason to since he pretty much got the kind of deal his musical forefathers never got
again with this artistic freedom s***. i can't bro
MJ / Prince / George Michael etc always struggled with labels, what makes you think Abel is better?

It might be truly what he feels, but I won't be surprised if it's just PR talk lmao
Plus, these days I read in a recent interview something that made me think. It was around Kiss Land, or after it left to be desired, so he was transitioning to another direction, that brought BBTM.
The quote was "I said all I had to say in those three albums" something along these lines. (Of course, referencing to the three mixtapes)
Hani making the same thread again when the album drops
This gif made me laugh! 🤣
By the way, what's wrong in expecting a musician to get better?😄
I mean, he hasn't invested enough in improving his pen game (and this damages of course both him as an artist, and us as listeners), but at least he can insist for independence.

“Make sure you own your music. That’s your soul, so make sure you own it. That’s all I can really say about that.”
Direct quote from the man. I think you’re undervaluing just how much he wanted to be a pop star even from the beginning.

I think there’s nothing wrong in wanting more from an artist especially knowing how talented Abel is and how far he’s come. But in regards to that quote about the mixtapes, I mean that was his entire life to that point summarized into 27 songs. After being in the same city and going through homelessness and all that s*** you think I wanna stay in that mindset just to make more music? He said himself he went to Japan cause it was the farthest away from Scarborough.
I think just sitting back and appreciating the moments instead of setting up personal expectations for what’s to come is the right way to experience this. And this is just a new peak, BBTM then Starboy a year later, AH now Dawn….just let the man do his thing.

They did him freaking dirty during the Invincible era. Way too much to even list
What makes you think he doesn't have a decent amount of artistic freedom?
Let's suppose he didn't ever make Initiation. Suppose he made it today, mastered it, ready to drop. Do you think Republic will allow it?
Some creative control is nice. (Although better believe his leash is short. They might throw him a bone by letting him pick a track of his own, 1 out of 8 or 10 from the album. Cause he's too profitable to be left to run wild, his debut album was enough for them)
Full creative control is better.

Yes they will. Most likely not as a single but it will be on the album. Only thing that will change is "meet my boys I got a lot of boys" lyrics which I'm sure Abel himself wouldn't include in the first place since society is really sensitive and aware now

You think that the label picks out tracks for his albums?
Look,I understand that fans who started to listen at the beginning are attached to his early music.
But to keep ignoring stuff like the Rolling Stone letter, him always saying he wanted to be a pop star, him saying this is the album he always wanted to make(dawn),owning his masters etc. is absurd.
He is a happy,31 year old pop star, not the 19 year old depressed kid whos music you lived vicariously through in your teenage years.
There are always 30+ readily available songs and features to listen if you want to hear that music.
But its so obvious that he doesn't want to make that.He said this a month ago:
"I feel like I said everything I needed to say on Trilogy—and that sound and whatever I wanted to put out into the universe. It created a genre, and I made 30 of those f***ing songs. I think by the time I got to Kiss Land, I was definitely emotionally tapped out. I did three albums in one year—plus I was working on Take Care too. And that was all in 2011."
Also this tweet that he tweeted when he played Birds Pt 2 on Memento.
There are business obligations to fulfill to the label.
Stuff like number of singles, what song is gonna be the single, generated money, interviews, promo, shows etc.
But to say that the label picks out his album tracks is ridiculous to me.
Ignoring stuff you don't like to hear isn't the way.
Some preposterous ideas about what he should do with his career aren't gonna bring back "Dark" music(whatever that means).
He has been making consistently great music for 10 years now,and he is super focused on making Dawn.
You don't have to like his new music, but strip back some preconceived ideas about how YOU want his music to sound, and enjoy(or don't,thats totally fair) whatever music HE wants to deliver!
Weeknd in deep to the label machine, he'll probably never leave the Universal umbrella. he also has no reason to since he pretty much got the kind of deal his musical forefathers never got
Plus, I think he actually wants what he has right now. He’s not looking to make Trilogy again — he wants big bangers with Max Martin which will consolidate his household brand, as he gradually makes his move into film.
Heartless is 3x platinum and Too Late wasn't released as a single lol,it doesn't mean that if it has a video its a single.(the video did flop tho)
Releasing a 6 minute single like Escape from LA or an unorthodox song like Faith would be suicide, especially when charts are so influenced by radio and sales.
And of course hes gonna push the Max Martin tracks, they are the one who chart,Weeknd's TrapNB doesnt chart, his pop music does.
