This tells me there was a faction of the american natsec establishment against the Iraq War
https://twitter.com/vermontgmg/status/1580949199151325184Well yes there was, but this could also just be ego tripping. Intelligence loves to think they are above the president so him lying about their reports wouldn't be taken well
First time hearing about this. Nuts

Seems far fetched that some spooks would go out of their way to torpedo the official foreign policy just because of their ego. Being angry that their intelligence is being misrepresented to justify a war they oppose seems more likely. Why they oppose it is what's up for grabs imo
Most of America's modern problems can be traced back to the Reconstruction/progressive era I think
I will save you from your loveless marriage, Yan
Most of America's modern problems can be traced back to the Reconstruction/progressive era I think
to some degree yeah this is basically true but it's kinda the same as saying like "most modern problems can be traced back to the fall of the roman empire" like okay yeah technically i guess A did lead to B which lead to C but it becomes a kinda chicken or the egg game. Like was the reconstruction period more influential than the WW2 post-war period? You can easily point to like Reconstruction -> Turn of the Century/Gilded Age -> Great Depression - Postwar but like that's kinda just reading off history at that point, ofc there's correlations but it seems too vague to point it all back to the first period, at that point you may as well say the issues started at the revolutionary war

What specifically
Most of America’s problems are foundational to its creation and it’s history has just been those contradictions compounding more and more stupidly
An uncritical devotion to liberty
The contradiction with chattel slavery
Private landowners superseding state-sponsored elite
Manifest destiny
Etc

Need to write about the wave of conservative POC being propped up in reaction to shallow lib idpol. Truly is the golden era for the Candaces of the world

Well obviously, aside from the fact that some problems arise later, but these conditions have to constantly reproduce themselves and there are turning point where their continued existence is very precarious.
I put "I think" cuz it's not something I've investigated or thought about enough, but the reason I say the Reconstruction/Progressive Era is because American racist/nativist and in turn labor dynamics are really cemented in that period imo.
1. The institutionalization of jim crow in the newly emancipated south wasn't as solid yet and there was vast intermingling between the black/white workers. If Johnson hadn't succeeded Lincoln (highly contingent) when the iron for reconstruction was still hot and the Republicans hadn't aborted Reconstruction so early with Grant, what would American race relations look like? What would American labor history look like?
2. Can a labor movement undivided by racism survive the kind of onslaught that the Knights of Labor went through? If they are able to, do we see an American labor party, which are emerging around the same time in other countries?
3. If American workers/progressives aren't driven into the ranks of the imperialist Republican Party, how do the controversial Spanish American/Banana Wars play out? What turn does American imperialism take in the 20th century if that project is jeopardized?
Of course this is all highly speculative with a lot of positive assumptions, but its interesting to think about how history could've played out. There's still the California genocide and Robber Barons (maybe a little weaker) in this timeline.
