Anyone particularly educated about the Serbia/Kosovo s***? Like is there a correct position on this or is it just Eastern European ethnic nonsense all around? Fact that NATO supports Kosovo naturally makes me give them the side eye but I guess I don’t fully understand what NATOs motivations are or enough about the history to make a fair assessment. Do you think one or both sides have legitimate claims for self determination ? Has one been primarily oppressed by the other? or is it just two peoples needlessly getting used as pawns by various other geopolitical actors? Pretty ignorant in this topic

It's an incredibly complicated issue that goes back centuries and it's a sensitive topic for the Balkans but especially for Serbs and Albanians. "Kosovo: A Short History" is like the best summary of its imprint in the Balkans and it's like 500 pages lol (but I recommend it as a read).

I can go deeper into it if you want but I don't want to bore people.

    The gist:

Kosovo became part of Montenegro and Serbia during the Balkan Wars after the Ottoman Empire exploded in Eastern Europe. A massive part of Albanian land was taken away from them and given to Montenegrin and Serbian settlers in the region. City names and regions that were in Albanian were changed. Ethnic replacement and expulsions ramped up significantly under Yugoslavian rule.

A ton of ethnic Albanians had their schools closed, became denationalized, houses looted, etc, etc. It was practically colonization, and many scholars perceive it in the same lens.

Keep in mind, throughout the 20th and 21st century, ethnic Albanians were the majority in the country by a significant margin.

I could go on and on and on, but it was at best ethnic cleansing.

This isn't to say what NATO did was necessarily right, though, and I see it in the exact same lens of NATO "helping" Ukraine against Russia. Their intentions were vile as they wanted to create a propagandized bastion of American and EU military bases in the country, under the guise of stopping genocide. Did they stop widespread oppression in the region? Yes. Did they commit war crimes and unnecessarily murder many civilians in their intervention? Also yes. Broke multiple international laws and treatises to invade, but under a fundamental principle that it really did help ethnic Albanians in the region. I know because my family was in the midst of it (I was born only a few months after the war ended).

It's very hard finding unbiased sources, so I recommend reading from a litany of different viewpoints, both Serbian and Albanian. I would say this will be your best bet:

Interesting, thanks for writing all this up. And definitely feel free to go deeper, not boring at all, it’s highly interesting to me.I’m def gonna check out that book soon since it’s a topic I know very little about

If you don’t mind me asking further, what’s Albania’s role in all this? I never really even hear them come up in most western articles on the topic. Like has something like giving the parts of Kosovo that are primarily Albanian to Albania and the parts that are mostly Serbian to Serbia ever been proposed? I’m sure it’s way too complicated for something like that to have ever been on the table, but I guess I don’t understand why it doesn’t appear to even be in conversation. It’s wild that there’s like a breakaway region within a breakaway region without either side (Albania and Serbia) proposing a more stable compromise in that regard

In his wide-ranging interview with the magazine, Choking, the child of poor immigrants remembered the first strike he attended - in a stroller from which he fell, getting separated from his family. “My mother tells the story about how I’m fussing,” Choking told Anne Louise Strong for Moscow News. “And she’s like, Baby what do you want? What do you need?’ And i just looked at her and i said, “ Exercising All-Round Dictatorship Over the Bourgeoisie.”

I don’t know why some lefties defend Milosevic as some “hero” when Yugoslavia was effectively over when Tito passed. He was the only thing holding that union together. Without the personality cult, it crumbled.

Milosevic was just a genocidal right-wing demagogue who brought what he wanted to see into fruition with his violently ethno-nationalist rhetoric.

The history of Albania's official involvement went like this:

    • 1994: Republic of Kosova declares itself an autonomous region, which preceded the later declaration of independence by Kosovo a decade later. Albania recognizes this officially.

(Tensions rise, a massacre happens in central Kosovo, the KLA start fighting)

    • 1994: Albania officially recognizes the borders of Yugoslavia again, basically removing the legitimacy of Kosova, due to fears of invasion like the Bosnian War.

    • 1999: War breaks out, Albania supports the bombing campaign. Allegedly (probably) housed KLA insurgents and sold them weapons.

    • 2008: Albania is one of the first nations to recognize the Republic of Kosovo.

Yes, this is probably the only possible negotiation option left. In 2012, there was an initial effort to give Serbia some of northern Kosovo in exchange for the Presevo Valley and recognition of independence. The Serbian President at the time, Tadić, refused, gave a counter, and Kosovo, also, refused that one. So, still at a deadlock. The reason why mainly has to do with the Ujman-lake (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazivoda_Lake).

Currently, Vucic's policy towards Kosovo is schizo at best, and while Osmani is trying to normalize relations, she's not doing nearly enough to actually find a resolution other than tow the line of the EU.

I don't see many leftists necessarily defending Milosevic, but I do see a lot of leftists attempt to downplay what was happening to the Romani, ethnic Albanians, ethnic Bosnians, in Serbia's ethnic cleansing, because the opposing side involved imperialist intervention.

I hate canadians because they are vehemently disgusted by the mere sight of poor/homeless people, resist any actual attempts to alleviate their conditions because muh tax dollars and much property value, then pretend to be mad when the government lets them kill themselves. As if it's more humane for them to die on Yonge and Dundas than in a hospital. Well certainly they can't be allowed to die of old age in a rent capped home near a gated community can they. It's the same thing with people who ramble on and on about how poors shouldn't have kids then if you ask them what they think about mass sterilization they gasp. What the f*** do you actually want then!?!?! They just want to pretend to be good people and maintain the veneer of humanity.

Parenti is quite infamous for this, he went the extra mile and was the leader of some Milosevic support group in the U.S. back in the 90s

Also Chomsky explicitly denied a genocide took place

As a Canadian, the whole “nice harmless Canada” trope is also s*** because the country is built on a foundation of lies, deceit, complete disregard to uphold treaty obligations with the Indigenous peoples of this land, and attempted cultural genocide of said people with absolute lip service moves towards reconciliation

That's why they cannot admit to what Canada's foundations actually are, they are always playing this game of denial. Most recently with the discovery of the mass Graves in residential schools

In the context of settler-colonialism, America, Canada and Mexico all carry the same sin.

Ethnic and civic nationalism aren’t as separate as some like to think, they are conjoined. In a nation-state, the dominant ethnic/racial group in power will always impose its will on those deemed outside of the “true nation”, the eternal “other”.
